WPS is the umbrella organization that does most of my communications-based projects, mostly zine publishing, such as HOMOCORE zine (1988-1991) (with Deke Motif Nihilson), BOY WITH GUN, and for about a year, FIDONEWS. It's done a few other things over the years. I stole the name from a particularly notorious mail-fraud scam perpetrated in the first year or so of BYTE magazine, '76 or '77. Seeing how the person responsible got caught, I figured they didn't need the name anymore.

The hardware here is a 80386-40MHz, 550MB in two IDE drives, and my one luxury, 16MB of memory. The link to the Internet is via The Little Garden, a San Francisco Bay area Internet service provider, using a pair of ZyXEL 16,800 baud modems.

I also have a DOS/Windows machine, with a 386SX-16MHz, and 2MB memory. This has a hand-held "256 level greyscale" $99 scanner attached.

The HTML text for this server was manually generated, using the excrable vi editor. The photos were scanned, clipped to 16-color monochrome to minimize size (and nearly no resolution loss). The other graphical items were made using Windows Paintbrush. All of the the image files were processed using LVIEW, to crop and convert to PCX and GIF formats.

At this point prepared images are moved to the unix box, and the images passed through the ppm* graphic tools; PCX converted to GIF, and GIFs sometimes get smaller, too.
