Contents of fido.wps.com, 1994

Somehow, this folder containing a root-level snapshot of my old fido.wps.com server, taken in 1994, has survived. It's 200 megabytes; it was huge at the time (for me).

fido.wps.com was a 386, 486, or 486dx CPU, I think 4 MB of RAM, in a small tower cabinet from Toptek, a computer store in San Francisco, a hard disk and one floppy. It ran 386BSD ("Jolix", not later 386/BSD), compiled from 24 floppy diskettes on the machine itself. It was connected to the internet by a 2400 bits/sec modem connected to The Little Garden via what we called "nail-up" service -- a pair of dedicated POTS phone lines, one at our apartment in the Mission and one at Gilmore's house, a modem at each end. Fido dialed in and stayed connected 24/7.

2400 bits/sec doesn't sound like much but this was revolutionary. Images were not yet common, services were DNS, email, ftp, finger, gopher (mostly to wiretap.spies.com). Fido ran a gopher server, later web and gopher, later just web. The web server is probably here somewhere, but not obvious, and I'm not looking for it.

This includes some very early source trees for archie, xarchie, gopher, etc. 1990, 1991, 1992, etc. If these refer to system libraries and sources, no, I do not have copies of those, this is all I have, don't ask.

Home directories

Also here are peoples' home directories. I've browsed to make sure there's nothing incriminating, though 30+ years is a good disinfectant; but if you do see something compromising, please let me know and I'll obscure/delete the least bit to make it safer.Obviously if it's your info I will do as you like no questions asked.

There are some "home" dirs that were intentionally public, and in /home to accommodate gopher, which was formulated as a way for internet users to see other internet users' home directories. Mull that over: so different than today's de facto institutional approach, where individuals pretend to be institutions, essentially branding them selves like mini, personal corporations, to present themselves to the world as entities. I fell for this too.
