Hey Simone !

   You guessed right ... topd475a.erim.org.

This flips me out that you sent me mail because I just had a dream
last night that you started your own computer business and lived in a
house with antique furniture.

So what's for lunch ? (sorry its just a habit) I have been eating
Healthy Choice for about two weeks straight and I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE !!!!
The mandatory 44 hour work week has stolen everybody's lunch hour. I really
need some beautiful eggs and about 4 glasses of ice tea !!

Well, how is it out there ? Let's see... it's probably
warm and sunny, you don't have to work and you're far away from
Dearborn Heights and all of its wonderful inhabitants.

I am looking forward to some five day weekends in the next few weeks. Too
bad I will be running around like an idiot buying presents and visting
in-laws. Speaking of in-laws ... Vickie is having twins !!

Brian is looking into a train trip to Toronto to see Phantom early next
year. That should be a fun get-away ... cold but fun.

Take it easy Simone and write back soon !

              - Susan

Hi!
Well you certainly picked a fine time to leave. ERIM is going down the
shit-can fast. The first round of layoffs were not too extensive. Larry
Joyce got hit - he turned 55 two days after he had to leave and would thus
have been eligible for VIRP. Nice, eh! The next round is starting to build
steam. Lots of secret meetings are going on. I have sent my resume out to
about 15 or so companies so far. Have not heard anything positive, but have
not heard anything negative either. The charge numbers are few and far
between and what there is to work on is incredibly boring. I struggle to stay
awake all day. There is no one interesting to talk to around here, although
it is nice having my own office (don't take it personally, I do miss you!).
I have you nameplate from the office, I'll send it to you as a late Xmas
present. How are your folks taking the whole situation? I assume they
are bummed that you are not coming home for Xmas. I had this dream around
Thanksgiving that you came back to visit. I said "Simone do you want to go
to Seva for lunch? You said "no, let's go to the Old German". I was so
bummed cuz the Old German is the last place a vegetarian would want to go.
What a nightmare, I was glad to wake up and find it was only a dream. You're
still eating interesting vegetarian concoctions aren't you? Well I need to
go pick up the munchkin. Just thought I would drop a line.

Hi Simone

Saw your card you sent to the department so I thought I would drop you
a note. Glad you are enjoying San Fransicso (sp). We don't have much
snow yet, but a little in the mornings which is melted by afternoon.
As you can imagine, ERIM is not doing so well right now. There is a
lot of people with no work in January, including me. But there seems
to be some hope down the line. I think ERIM will survive but with
less employees.

On positive news, the Executive on the Sun is moving along. The core
works just needs a lot of touch up. And I have only 4 more months of
school before I am done withe my masters!

Have a great Christmas and Happy New Year!

hi simone!
i'm so glad you wrote. I'm feeling a little crazy tonight. No I
did not finish anything i was supposed to over break, but i relaxed
and had a great time with susan. i'm sorry johnny is being such a
wierdo, he is a boy though and although we love them, i think it's
just a certain reality that we have to deal with that they are
wierdos. oh well, what can we do. i remember sf though, there's
alot of cute boys so i wouldn't worry too much, if anything the fling
was a good warm up. i hope that doesn't sound callous, you didn't
fall in love did you? my advice would be a little cold if you
did..you know i care. well, the karen thing is going well..she's
been really sweet and i miss her alot, especially now that i'm back
in school. umd is a real drag without her. today i found out that i
can't register for next term until i come up with some cash to pay
for the last one..i'm freaking out...this is not a good sign..it's
only the first day of class..i talked to my dad though and i think he
might be able to help if i get desperate enough...we'll see..it'll be
really tragic if i can't go...it'll totally screw up my plans for the
next two years..i won't be coming in february..i'm waiting until july
when i can stay longer and will be stress free except for the field
work i'm going to do..over break i made some contacts for my project
and i think i'm going to new york in feb. instead. there's a huge
scene there and i have a friend that i can stay with. this term is
going to be murder too, but that won't bother me if it gets paid for.
i'm feeling pretty focused and very determined to achieve the genius
status..no problem right...susan read my fairy tale..we are going to
work on it together next summer..this summer i'll be in france with
my dream girl..(smile) anyway who knows we could end up
publishing..that would be great..then susan and i will be famous and
a little richer..of course we'll share the wealth..i hope you find a
job soon, although i can perfectly understand you feeling so
reluctant about it...i know i was...well, you know me i could write
forever, but i should go back and study..oh thank you for the card
and the pictures, they turned out pretty good. as soon as i get some
brushes i'll paint. i loved the card it was very funny and very
appropriate. well, write again soon i'll be at school seven days a
week. this place is deserted now, i think i'll go home...it's a
little depressing here...take care hugs and kisses and ta ta...i miss
you too!

Hi Simone !

I glad that you are enjoying the good life in San Francisco.
Raisin toast and oatmeal! I thought you were going to be experiencing
some exotic foods there ! My mom fed me raisin toast and oatmeal until I was
about 12 years old! So what else have you been doing besides eating strange food combinations?
I have been craving huevos hermoses ( I'm sure that is spelt rong).
Finally, I broke down, tossed my dry, cold pizza in the trash and called up
Cafe Marie. I'm not sure that they do much carry-out business but they
will be hearing from me every couple of weeks.
The work situation here is still pretty secure for me - at least
for now. They will be cutting throats sometime this month. It just
sucks working for a sick company. I hope they get something figured out
soon. They've taken away our water now. What's next, the lights, the heat,
the chairs ???
It was -3 degrees (Farenheight)this morning and it might hit 20 degreestoday! We have about 10 inches of snow but it is too damn cold to go
sledding or skiing. Katie can't even make a snowman with this crunchy stuff.
I think we'll wait til spring to go to Toronto.
I am very sorry you need gloves sometimes.
Aerobics is still going good. The classes have been more full
(and fun) recently because people want to pay for their holiday binges.
I am going to a funk workshop next month that should be fun. (It's free too)
Linda got her eyelids done and is trying to deny it with black circles around her eyes. She hid from us for about a week.
That's all the news and gossip for now.

	Bye .......
                      Susan

Hi Simone

Well, I am trying to keep busy at ERIM. It is getting to the point
where I am not sure what I will be working on tomorrow. I have a lot
of job possiblities but nothing for sure.

Yes, the executive port to sun now works. But I am not sure if anyone
will ever use it. Somebody will probably dig it up 10, 20 years from
now and say this is really neat! People just don't want to put the
time and money in it now, considering the situation.

Still enjoying SF? How about the map? Still useful or have you
memorized it yet? Are you getting tired of unemployment? Sometimes
I wish I was unemployed, must be nice.

See Ya

Tim

how are you? i'm sorry to hear about johnny's crazy and unexplainable
behavior-men are wierd, we love them, but they are wierd-i know you
agree. i'm feeling pretty productive today, which is good because i
have to write two papers and study for a final today-ugh! after this
week though everything should fall into the normal pace of insanity
as opposed to this unbelievable pressure i'm experiencing now. i
talked to karen the other day, well actually two days in a row-will i
ever get to france this way? i couldn't help myself- i had just
gotten off work and i felt this incredible urge to call, almost like
she was willing me to-or that i was just lonely. well, it turned out
that i called her a half hour before she was leaving for her first
real day in the "field". she was so nervous and scared. she
couldn't believe i called her-it was wierd. just love i suppose.
then the next night the same thing happened, and once again she was
feeling very down and lonely...she's having a hard time with her
boyfriend-Laurent(pronounced with that silly french nasal sound-
haha). anyway, he has already become used to her being there and
she's feeling very taken for granted and unsupported. the problem is
she keeps comparing him to me (not my problem) which i guess he's
failing miserably. i tried to tell her to give him a chance,
especially since she has to live with him for the next 7 months.
it's so hard to just be her friend, while trying to tell her not to
love me in the way i want her and to give laurent a chance-sounds
like the blaise story revisited. oh well, time will tell..i am very
excited though-selfishly- that i treated her better and she loves me
more..overall, i'm sorry she's unhappy, but i'm glad to know she
loves me..
i hope you get that apartment, it sounds great- i can't wait to come
and visit..i'm not sure if it'll be this summer or not. samer quit
working at delta- i can't say i'm surprised, very disappointed, but
not surprised. so we'll see. good luck with work and dance. i'm so
happy for you simone- it seems that very soon everything will fall
into place for you. well, i have to get to work, if i start to feel
crazy again, i'll write later. tell dina i said hi, i'll write later
and of course, you can share the message..tell josh to write to me, i
miss him alot and i want to know how he's doing and what kind of
trouble he's getting into..ok- this is getting to be a long see ya,
so i'll say bye now. love tina

> A dialogue by Terry Bisson. From a series of stories entitled
> "Alien/Nation" in the April issue of Omni.

"They're made out of meat."

"Meat?"

"Meat. They're made out of meat."

"Meat?"

"There's no doubt about it. We picked several from different parts of
the planet, took them aboard our recon vessels, probed them all the
through. They're completely meat."

"That's impossible. What about the radio signals? The messages to
the stars."

"They use the radio waves to talk, but the signals don't come from
them. The signals come from machines."

"So who made the machines? That's who we want to contact."

"They made the machines. That's what I'm trying to tell you. Meat
made the machines."

"That's ridiculous. How can meat make a machine? You're asking me to
believe in sentient meat."

"I'm not asking you, I'm telling you. These creatures are the only
sentient race in the sector and they're made out of meat."

"Maybe they're like the orfolei. You know, a carbon-based
intelligence that goes through a meat stage."

"Nope. They're born meat and they die meat. We studied them for
several of their life spams, which didn't take too long. Do you have
any idea the life spam of meat?"

"Spare me. Okay, maybe they're only part meat. You know, like the
weddilei. A meat head with an electron plamsa brain inside."

"Nope. We thought of that, since they do have meat heads like the
weddilei. But I told you, we probed them. They're meat all the way
through."

"No brain?"

"Oh, there is a brain all right. It's just that the brain is made out
of meat!"

"So... what does the thinking?"

"You're not understanding, are you? The brain does the thinking. The
meat."

"Thinking meat! You're asking me to believe in thinking meat!"

"Yes, thinking meat! Conscious meat! Loving meat. Dreaming meat.
The meat is the whole deal! Are you getting the picture?"

"Omigod. You're serious then. They're made out of meat."

"Finally. Yes, they are indeed made out meat. And they've been trying
to get in touch with us for almost a hundred of their years."

"So what does the meat have in mind."

"First it wants to talk to us. Then I imagine it wants to explore the
universe, contact other sentients, swap ideas and information. The
usual."

"We're supposed to talk to meat?"

"That's the idea. That's the message they're sending out by radio.
'Hello. Anyone out there? Anyone home?' That sort of thing."

"They actually do talk, then. They use words, ideas, concepts?"

"Oh, yes. Except they do it with meat."

"I thought you just told me they used radio."

"They do, but what do you think is on the radio? Meat sounds. You
know how when you slap or flap meat it makes a noise? They talk by
flapping their meat at each other. They can even sing by squirting
air through their meat."

"Omigod. Singing meat. This is altogether too much. So what do you
advise?"

"Officially or unofficially?"

"Both."

"Officially, we are required to contact, welcome, and log in any and
all sentient races or multibeings in the quadrant, without prejudice,
fear, or favor. Unofficially, I advise that we erase the reconds and
forget the whole thing."

"I was hoping you would say that."

"It seems harsh, but there is a limit. Do we really want to make
contact with meat?"

"I agree one hundred percent. What's there to say?" `Hello, meat.
How's it going?' But will this work? How many planets are we dealing
with here?"

"Just one. They can travel to other planets in special meat
containers, but they can't live on them. And being meat, they only
travel through C-space. which limits them to the speed of light and
makes the possibility of their ever making contact pretty slim.
Infinitesimal, in fact."

"So we just pretend there's no one home in the universe."

"That's it."

"Cruel. But you sid it yourself, who want to meet meat? And the ones
who have been aboard our vessels, the ones you have probed? You're
sure they won't remember?"

"They'll be considered crackpots if they do. We went into their heads
and smoothed out their meat so that we're just a dream to them."

"A dream to meat! How strangely appropiate, that we should be meat's
dream."

"And we can marked this sector unoccupied."

"Good. Agreed, officially and unofficially. Case closed. Any
others? Anyone interested on that side of the galaxy?"

"Yes, a rather shy but sweet hydrogen core cluster intelligence in a
class nine star in G445 zone. Was in contact two galactic rotation
ago, wants to be friendly again."

"They always come around."

"And why not? Imagine how unbearably, how unutterably cold the
universe would be if one were all alone."

Hi Simone

I liked it so much I emailed it to another friend of mine. Glad
things are going well. So far, I received letters from companies in
Chicago and Boston interested in interviewing me. We will see if I
stay at ERIM or move on and explore the world.

Hi Simone!

Thanks for the Christmas card. I accidentally threw away
the envelope that it came in so I didnUt know where to send a
letter back to. I got your e-mail address from Eric. What
does wps stand for?

Where are you living now? Last time I talked to you, you
were planning on moving to California. Did you find a job?
(I assume you did or you wouldnUt have an e-mail address.)

Things are going o.k. for me. I am taking classes and
I go back to ERIM on Tuesdays and Thursdays for Tae Kwon Do.
This year is a lot easier than last year was. I think that the
first year of grad school is usually the hardest for everyone.

How long did you end up staying at ERIM? I don't know
exactly how things are going on the project... I talked to
Walt today and he said that they hadn't gotten "it" to work. He
had been reading the memo I wrote last summer because (he said)
that no one else understood it... Maybe I put in too much
detail... In spite of that Eric said that they might be in need
of help next summer so I might be back for summer #4! I still
need to find an advisor so I might not be able to come back
if my advisor decides that I need to spend the summer preparing
for my orals.

If you write back, include your and John's addresses.

hi there! it's 11:00 monday morning and your letter was perfect! i always
feel so silly sitting here cracking up at zee computer..can you believe that
eez a bel! that's a great story, it's right up there with my poo story. i
talked to dina, she said you got an apartment in the panhandle-great you'll
be right by the park-bee--uu-tiful!! i also loved your aesthetic typos,
you're very entertaining-like a little poodle-just kidding. everything is
going well, school is great, shaloo is doing much better, she got a job at
uno's in w.bloomfield-she likes it, she's going to belize next year. cory
(this is the correct spelling) is doing well also, and yes we are causing
havoc in the anthro lounge. it was funny one day, shaloo, renee(another one
of my colleagues-haha-ilike the way that sounds) and i went to the tuesday
chat with moerman-the brillant one-and we all have long hair, we all wore
long dark skirts, accented with black shirts(coincidentally shaloo and i
matched) and we all had dark lipstick on, we were the sisters of anthro-the
look for post-modern intellects. my cold is getting better-i willed it
away, i just refused to be sick, i took a few herbs-echinacea, drank alot of
juice and ignored it, it's practically gone now-hooray!! other news, work
is going well. i'm in one of those phases where i feel very sexy and horny,
and i want to fuck all the boys and girls that i work with and because i
can't decide, i just go home and masturbate-i've got to get laid!!! let's
see, there's eddie the cook, he's a sexy, hot african-american lover who
wants me bad-he told me so, then there's terry-a waiter, who looks like he's
fourteen, short, skinny, floppy hair, wire-rimmed glasses-someone i'd
definitely top!!of course, there's mark, i just want to play with his very
curly hair, he's also a culinary arts student-you know how i am about them,
and then there's Guy(gee) who is tall, lanky, gaunt and shy and bi-very
sexy, i'd strap on for that one, let's see who else? oh god, there's the
bartender deborah-what a fucking body!!!she's a total straight girl, so this
one will never go beyond my head-but she's about six feet tall and she has
long curly blond hair, big eyes, big lips, and the most beautiful big
butt!!i love her, second to karen, of course. speaking of which, things are
ok-the same. the unpredictability of the outcome of our relationship is
sometimes unnerving, but i can be pretty patient. we'll see this summer,
i'll just have to sweep her off her feet. hmm..what else, i miss brenda, i
called about a week ago, but things have been pretty nuts with school-so
it's hard to see anyone. that's about it, i'll be here all day, i have to
transcribe two and a half hours of tapes-ugh!! so maybe i'll write later.
thanks again for the very entertaining letter-you put me in a good mood for
the day. say hi to everyone, tell josh to write me, the little shit-he
forgot me already. i miss him and of course i miss you very much. it's so
wierd that you brought up lexington, because friday night-the day you wrote
this i thought about going there for the day, while i was driving home from
work, we must be spiritually connected-you sent me good vibes-anyway, take
care, i love you, good luck, blah, blah, blah...love tina

Hi Simone,
What's shakin ? (couldn't resist the California joke)
Well, I just got a call from someone from San Francisco asking about
your character, working skills etc. His name and company seemed to run
together so I didn't catch either one. He had a strong Asian accent.
I, of course, told him how difficult you were to work with and and what
horrendous computer skills you have. Seriously, I told him you were a
very dilligent and competent worker. I mentioned the old Controls Lab
partnership too.
I hope you find something good there. Erim is certainly not a
popular place to work ! Larry Thompson resigned last week and I found
out today that Linda Brown resigned ! They aren't going to be laying
anybody else off in the SDL until May. Supposedly, if we get enough
new business, there won't be anymore layoffs. (yeah, right)
Well, I have been getting a lot of stuff to do here. Hell, if
people keep leaving we'll all be working 'round the clock.
Vickie had the twins two weeks ago. Brittany and Brandi, ~ 4 lbs
each, 17" long, 1 month premature. Not too bad for preemies. The family
seems to be doing well (so far). Katie is turning green with jealousy. I
can't handle being pressured by a 4 year old to gain 30 lbs, get cut open and
survive on 4 hours sleep for about 6 months.
Well, that is all for now. Write back soon !!

	SUSAN

i love getting your letters! you are so funny...i think you're making
the right decision by following your instincts- he sounds like an
idiot and you have no reason to accept anything out of desperation.
good luck with this other interview...i'm glad to hear that you are
all settled in. i wish i could come out there over break, i'm
already ready for another vacation..where is your apartment, how
close are you to the park, the ocean, the haight, the babes? i'm
still horny, blaise is coming over tonight, we're going to drink wine
and he's spending the night, maybe i'll rape him! Karen called the
other day, yesterday as a matter of fact. it was good, she misses me
alot. but, she did say that she's starting to feel love for laurent
again. i don't know, i really think i'm going to get hurt by all of
this. sometimes it's a little frightening. but i still keep holding
on. right now it gives me a sense of security in a strange way.
well, i do know she loves me, so time will tell the rest. samer has
been calling alot lately, so much so that i had to vocalize the
futility of any ideas he may have of us getting together, oh no, he
said, i know we're just friends. ugh! it was wierd the other day,
he came to um-d to bring me some papers. wow have i changed. this is
mean but i felt kind of embarrassed, i know it's bitchy, but simone
he had big hair and he was wearing a gold s on his neck. when cory
and shaloo met him, they were nice, but i could sense the confusion
and humor in their hearts, i could barely reveal it myself.
haha..this is mean-so what! anyway, so much for that, i haven't
talked to him since. i couldn't even relate to him, so we spent the
whole half hour teaching me how to write my name in arabic to impress
shryock-my favorite prof in the whole world. did dina tell you paul
hughes is back..i think i might make a move. a cheap sordid affair
with a philo prof would be fun...anyway..i've been kind of lonely
lately, well, very lonely ok...but i'll be alright. school is good.
last tues. i turned in a 27 page(single-spaced mind you)
transcription of the interview i did with rob, shryock loved it. now
he wants to hear tom's side of the story..i told him i'd tape the
interview, but i won't do another transcription that will take
another 20 hours to do. so that's good...i'm ok..i'm just trying to
fend off my seasonal depression, it's trying to seep in the
cracks..but i'm pretty stubborn so it'll be ok. I talked to work,
i'm going to europe for the summer. i'm leaving around the first
week of june and i'll probably come back around the second week of
august. i've become a real miser...brown bagging it everyday and a
real mooch too. haha..who'd thought? brenda and i watched movies
the other day, i hooked up the vcr in the basement with my mom's old
tv..it's pretty cool, i have a real pad set up now. i've started
working out with the step aerobics-tell dina i'm following her
example, slow and steady...well, i guess that's it...same old
thing...let me know how everythings going..sorry i'm not so
entertaining today..i'll leave that up to you...share this note with
dina, i'm too tired to repeat..in fact-hi dina, i'll call you
soon..take it easy kids. i love you and i miss you alot!~!!!! i'll be
here all day tomorrow, i'd love to hear from you..bye bye.

Hi Simone,

How's it going ? How did your job interview that you didn't want to jinx
turn out?

Things here at ERIM are about as peppy as usual. Management is extremely
uptight. The latest incident of adding insult to injury is that working
through lunch is frowned upon and must be approved by department heads.
I don't know why they don't just make us punch in. Or better yet, they
could monitor our cerebral activity and pay us by the amount of time
actually spent thinking about work.

You know what my latest assignment is ? I get to train Lynne to do the
work that I do for 3-D SAR. They've given approximately 4 hours to do it.
This includes crash courses in imgmanip, emacs and Unix. To make things
worse, they are giving us less money to process nearly twice the data
that we processed last summer.

I finally bought a wireless microphone for aerobics ! It cost me about
what I make in 6 months of teaching aerobics but I guess it'll pay off.
I'm going to use it for the first time in tonight's class but of course
we got a huge ice-snow storm so I'll be loud and clear to about 5 people.

Have you been watching Mel Rose Place ? Wow! It was amazing how they
got you to hate Reed and not care to see him get blown away all in one
episode. And that Sydney thing still has me puzzled ? Is she a psycho
or what ? What does she want with Michael ? Of course Joe and Jake
will be back together in a few epsiodes. He'll probably rescue Joe from
jail somehow.

Tonight is the big skating event and Mel Rose Place. What a dilemma ?
I just want to see that Russian skater, Oksana something, steal the gold
from both those wenches.

  Talk to you later,

  Susan

Hi Simone,
So you live in a Melrose Place ? Tell me more. I want to hear the
Johnny thing. I've missed the last one or two episodes of the real show.
Last week I had the flu and slept from 5 pm to 5 am.
(After taking some good nausea medicine).

I have to fill you in on the latest Erim stuff. We have several farewell
luncheons weekly now. Larry Brod left for Ford (or GM) last week. He
accepted a job at GM for 5% more pay when Ford called him and offered him
10% more pay. I don't know what he wound up doing. Rick Prezbienda
(my office mate) took a job at EDS. His farewell luncheon is this week.
Scott Gaboury (from ESDD) is leaving this week. Some big guy in security
just left. Even more people are working on getting out of here.

Well, here I am. I haven't taken any action to find a new job. Actually,
I have been getting more and more good work to do. I hope this place can
hang in for a while longer.

What's your latest job situation ? Working, looking, quitting ?? Did you
buy that bike yet ?

My sister was faced with putting some big money into fixing her boat or
selling it. I panicked ! So now we (Brian,me,my sister and her husband)
are co-owners. Weekend boat trips are about the only vacations I'll get
this year. (I've been sucking down the CPT with being sick)

Well, I better get back to work. (they may have that cerebral activity
monitor on me)

Hey, when (if ever) are you going to come for a visit ?

Susan

Hi,
How in the hell are you? What are you up to? Are you ever coming home for a visit? Hey, I just heard that Susan is getting married!!! Are you going to
the wedding? So please fill me in on the latest. Did you find a job yet? Life
at ERIM is going down the tubes fast. We had the initial layoffs in October,
then more in January, 7 people from the clean room were given the Slow Death
Option recently ( be laidoff or stay for 4 months and then just be gone), last
Wed. 6 more were laid off and two were given reduced appointments, other people
are leaving weekly of their own accord (I probably have attended at least one
goodbye lunch per week this month). I'm still looking of course. I am
expecting an offer from Motorola in a couple weeks. We took a trip to DC to
check out the area and really liked it. Jerry had a couple interviews at MCI,
so maybe we will hear something good from there. Hope to hear from you soon.

It seems that I should respond in turn with a senseless message:

The world is too big a place for burrowing worms like you! The fuzzy uzzy
udders of the underpuppy mothers tempt you toward
tranquility, and though we all know you worms are strong in
your resolve, no segmented cylindrical cyst can hold out for long in the
glare of the mothers' stare.

Save your days for the hour of the mother, (worms cHOBE and sIMONE that
are sister and brother), for together you wriggle in puddles in the gutter,
like a feather and a lover under underpuppy udders...you will dry in the
sun if you let the bacon run: there are no containers of spongy meat in the
hands of those who lay you at their feet.

AAGH!

So you guys made it home, obviously. Does CHOBE have to work for the next
10 days straight? Get a band CHOBE! Rock.

So Simone,
I think you now have more friends here than I do. I noticed you hit it
off O.K. with Kate and Beth. If
you'd
stuck around you would have gotten to see kate get really drunk and kiss
me alot, which was O.K. for a while but then I freaked out and walked home
(from the next party). The party you two attended has apparently become
legend around here (it wasn't that great, was it?). I'm really glad you
guys mad it up here. It really made my weekend. I can't believe (well
yes I can) that you drove to L.A. at midnight. Did you have a good time
there or were you too tired and in too much of a hurry to get home? Did
you meet HERMAN the red monster? Well, better split (lickety) so hope to
here from you soon now that we know the connection is open.

Take care you crazy mother-fuckers named Gusto,
Love,
Ben

P.S.
Tell those other people at the house "Hi" for me.
Except for Matt.

Hey I sure did like your letter. Rico may very well be my best friend but
you're a hell of a lot better at e-mail.

That must have been the very peak of your Hunter S. T. like adventure when
you were pulled over in la. I can't believe the cops were such racist
bastards.

So I guess you guys got back on Sunday, right? That gave Rico a little
time to hang out and probably not rest before work on Monday. So do you
think of your trip in a way that you could say it was a good or bad
experience or was it just a long weird (and fatiguing) experience?

The reason I freaked out on Kate is that I decided I really wasn't
attracted to her about 5 seconds after she started kissing me. Suddenly I
could taste the last ciggarette she smoked and identify what kind of beer
had recently been in her mouth (and probably came back out, the way she
was going). So anyway I freaked out and walked home, spitting
occaisionally. I like "Miss Probe-Kravitz" O.K., but we really don't seem to
have much in common, and yes she was the "hot date" and anyway we're going
camping this weekend (with her other friends) and I guess I'm going to be
really interested in the things that they're into, because I'm going to
have fun, goddammit.

You should live here instead of them, Simone. You
are instantly interesting, and so is your friend Rico. How did you hook
up with him ? Doh!

I hope your job hunting is successful in a way that you can deal with (a cool
job). Are most places over in Oakland, or is there actually a lot of
stuff downtown?

You asked me to tell you about my life. I'm pretty happy these days,
because I'm in school for reasons I care about and I live in an O.K. place
and I actually know some people here now, and I have a job that I never go
to. A lot of my life, is of course determined by the way
things are around my house, which is for the most part fine and doesn't
cause me any stress. I will tell you more about my roommate, however.

My roomate, who you met, is a very nice girl who is kind and generous and
patient and understanding, but also overwhelmingly negative, which amuses
me (a lot). The only downshot is that, being insecure and negative, she
is incapable of showing interest in thing that she doesn't have a large
personal stake in, like my life, so I'll give you an amusing example:

[Angie comes in to the house]

Angie: Hi Ben!

Ben: Hi Angie! How was your day? (He asks knowingly)

Angie: Long and unproductive.

[Ben waits for her to ask about his date the night before, which he has been
mentioning all week, but finally turns to the old "ask them what you want
them to ask you" ploy]

Ben: What did you do last night?

Angie: Well I hung out at Lee's (this guy who's a good friend of her car,
and who she likes taking pictures of to prove that she has a friend who is a
gay black bodybuilder) until really late which is bad because I have so
much reading to catch up on...[edited for length].

Ben:Well I had a nice time on my date last night, but it was weird because I
felt like we didn't have much in common. It seemed like--

Angie: That'ssowierdthatyousaythat because that's how I always felt with
Kevin (a guy she picked up in a club, who later became intimate with her car),
and you know I saw him yesterday and I just freaked out and I just didn't know
what to say or how to feel, cause, you know, I feel taken advantage of
since he still owes me the money from wrecking the car, but a few weeks
ago when he was drunk and stoned he said he loved me and I think it may
have been just to use me or [edited for length]

[Ben listens patiently, (and with declining genuine interest), offering
consolation and common sense advice when appropriate, for the next 2-6 hours .

These conversations have become a fun game for me, and I also enjoy the
creative analogies she uses to bring things back on track whenever the
conversation strays toward my friends or interests.

Well that's how things are at my house.

You know, I never hear much about your roommates. You met them through
roommate referral or something similar, didn't you? Which room are you in?
(I know your flat well...I went to some nice parties there)
It's pretty cool how that type of thing (roommate referral) actually
works in San Francisco. Just one more cool thing about the mindset there.
Tell everyone at the house hello for me (except for Matt) and don't feel
pressured to respond with a letter as lengthy as this one, unless you have
time, which would be very nice. And you can talk about yourself all that
you want because you're interesting and positve and I just don't know that
much about you, which is a bad thing.
This computer isn't at your house is it? Is it really convenient for you
to print stuff?, because I want to write to Rico Lee and Matt and some of the
upstairs people and I don't want to overwhelm you or overly take advantage
of someone's computer.
Well I guess I'd better go before this letter gets any longer and I clog up
the Internet or something. Oh yeah--"Virtual Job". That's cool.

Hasta la vista,
Ben.

so what is this new writing style with no caps? are you trying to test me
on a monday morning? cruel, very cruel. well, i have not heard from motort, i have to call if he doesn't call me tonight. i'm beginning to worry a
little because it is dragging out so long. it is not in d.c. though, it is
in chicago which means i may not take it anyway cuz we really want to go south
to virginia now. so maybe the wait is inconsequential. since i last wrote
you i have been called by three companies in d.c. two are beltway bandits and
one is a real company. i am expecting a couple of interviews from these. my
parents are quite bummed at the prospect of moving but understand the situation.
jerry's mom on the otherhand is another story. she keeps getting me peoples'
cards that she meets who are even remotely in some sort of engineering-like
job. she works at h&r block during tax season and knows what everyone does forr
a living and how much money they make. the only problem is that these companies
are all manufacturing oriented and have nothing to do with my skills or interests. she could actually be valuable if she was in, say, d.c. she thinks this
whole move is my fault because i am being so picky about what i want to do.
the fact that jerry has wanted to move for the last ten years has conveniently
slipped from her mind.

sounds like you are really having it rough. my sympathies. what are you going
to do with your parents when they visit? are they staying with you? you know
you are going to lose your mind before they leave don't you!

well i should really go and do my "work". you know i have desire to play
minesweeper any more. it's just no fun if i have no one to compete against.
there's no motivation to be better, no one to beat the pants off.

bye for now,

Dear Simone,

I didn't mean to concern you with my last e-message. I'm not sure what I
was thinking, but I really wasn't having a crisis or anything.

I guess you must have to go quite a ways to get to your friends computer,
since you have to take the (fucking) 22 and the (better) 5, and then walk.
I'm going to go home and go to sleep for a while, because I'm, you know,
tired.

I'm going back to Las Cruces again this weekend (Thursday). I don't know
why.

I can never remember what was in the letter I'm responding to.

I promise I will send a far superior e-boy later.

Home schooling is where a parent teaches a child at home, and the child
has to be able to pass standardized tests occaisionally. You probably
can't do that for a college degree, though, and I guess you're not my
parent, so now I see clearly that it was a dum idea. Sorry.

Good luck w/jobs!

HEYHEYHEYHEY--I'm Fat Albert or something, Simone

I'm not tired anymore...and I've realized that for some reason you always
hear about it (in detail) when I am. I'm not really one of those tired
type people--I just had my first bout of insomnia, though I guess it's not
a clinical type case because it was probably brought on by the 3 cups of
coffee I had that evening. Then the next night I spent at Nicole's and we
talked (yes talked, Rico) until about 5:00. The conversation was a lot
better than normal...We're finally finding some common ground...but for me
I must admit that it was more sexual tension than the fascinating subject
matter that kept me awake. Enough.

Rockin the urban hardcore at 16th and Mission. Look out your window at
those orange bricks and praise Frank Jordan, leader of the "lives somewhere
safer/cleaner(and culturally vacant)" coalition.

Your philosophical insights into e-boy are brilliant. I think we are
doing pretty well interpreting "voice", but like you said, it will take
time to become fluent in this new language between new freind, and there
will probably be the occasional expression that can be easily misunderstood
by the dick eating moron at the other end.

If I was completely confident in our communication ability, I wouldn't
mention that that was a joke.

I leave to go to Las Cruces at 7:00 pm tonight (THurs). I'm looking
forward to the trip as much as the visit, because my friend Danielle (the
car owner) is one of the most entertaining people I know.

So hows your day to day stuff? You probably don't have any kind of
routine right now, which is probably pretty nice in a lot of ways. I
would still be interested to know what you ususally put in your coffee,
however, and if you match your socks.

I read the news today-Oh boy.

I hung out with an old friend named MOnica last night who is so
politically active that...(sorry I couldn't think of anything). But
anyway, she's been interested in such issues for about 100 times as long as
I have (and has read all the right book, of course), but I was able to
converse (I thought) intelligently on almost everything that came up, much
to my relief. I guess what really matters is that you have a point of
view and reasons for it ...not necessarily how well read you are.
Through her I'm probably going to end up meeting the whole fucking
local dissident community, and I'll find out if I can stand them (and them
me). Don't you think radicals tend to be somewhat arrogant? I don't want
to be an -ist (Marxist Anarchist Socialist etc...); entirely too much
connotation, and a lot of it somewhat accurrate.

I think I'm going to actually write a separate letter for Rico here in a
minute, if you don't mind. You're still my favorite, though.

Tell me about your last bus ride.

xoxo

Ben

Dear brotha biscuit motha fucka,

This letter will have a minimum of nonsense (thought I'd warn you).

I just wanted to see how band stuff was progressing. You better do
something, or we will all kick your butt (me and...uh, well I'm taking
karate). I know you now have everthing you need (mentally) to make the
most amazing creation in S.F., and I'm completely confident that once you
get the right people it will only be a matter of time before great things
of some sort start to happen. I know you don't really need to hear this,
but I love to give you my support, my freind.

Has ol' Tom quit yet? Probably not. He still hasn't written me back. My
letter was so nice and genuinely affectionate that he probably thought I
was patronizing him. Now that I don't work at the store any more, I kind
of realized that we were pretty good friends. Kind of like when Carolyn
moved out of the house, remember?

How's Suzanne? I still don't fully understand your relationship. Matt
said he thinks you're wrapped around her finger, but I have my doubts.
Besides, how
can it be much different if you actually care about her. It's all part of
NICE GUYS DON'T GET LAID.

Angelica's all wierd now since she heard about me & Nicole
dating...camping...etc...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I win.

Did you hear I made out with...no...I got made out with by Kate. She
called me the next day and apologized. I went by her work to sort of
signal that everything was cool and she gave me a coke and seemed weird
and nervous, and left the restaurant immediately after getting off work
(I had just gotten there) without really talking to me, which I thought was
really cool.

I win again.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. ha.

Tonight Danielle and I venture homeward. I guess I might as well see
Johnna again (right?--TELL ME). Aaron and I e-mail and he said he saw her
at a party and she's "abso-fucking-lutely head over heels for you
dude"(Aaron quote).

I win.

AGAIN!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

And that one really makes me laugh.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHa!!!

Are you laughing?

I don't mean to sound like a womanizer--in fact I haven't slept with
anybody. But this is all pretty darn amusing to me for some reason.

HAHAHA. Ho. Excuse me.

Well I've gotten a little self indulgent in this letter so I will ask more
questions and comment further on things that pertain to your life in the
urban hardcore.

Hows the house? Do you talk much to Lee? Is Matt around thaat much? I
have a suspicion that the biscuit house isn't as much of an impervious
group anymore...everyone is more developing there own lives, right?

Call Lisa for me, goddammit, and tell her to send me her address or call
me and also ask her if she has an e-mail account. That goddammit was for Lisa,
not you--"sorry" (pronounced in the Darrin Robinson fashion).

I'm always thinking of moving back...and more because I miss you than
anything else, to be honest. But I must complete my training...

On to LAS CRUCES,

I'll tell them all that Rico says to eat lots of meat, and if they ask why

you say that I'll tell them, "because at one time meat had blood flowing

through it, just like potatoes." Actually say that, right now, so I won't

be lying.

Your old make-believe made of straw and gasoline smelling idol,

This machine will be off the air for some number of hours, spottily,
this weekend. I've got a new computer to install, a 486DX2-66 plus a
gigabyte disk. Oh boy.

Theold machine will be a bag on the side of the new one, in case any
funny business happens. You might not even notice the change over.
