                            The Confidence Test

The Confidence Test is supplied to aid in trouble-shooting the SMC Elite32
card. It tests basic functionality by writing and reading the ports on the
card, as well as transmitting and receiving packets.

In order to obtain accurate test results, the Confidence Test must be run
prior to loading drivers or other TSRs into memory. In addition, the ports
on the card must be connected to properly terminated cable segments. Finally,
make sure that the cables do not have network activity on them.

Two pieces of information are required by the Confidence Test. First, you
must indicate how many channels you would like to test. If you would like to
test Channel A only, enter a "1" when prompted. If testing both channels is
desired, enter "2". Second, be prepared to specify the slot which contains the
card being tested. If you are unsure of the slot number, you can obtain this
information from the EISA Configuration Utility.

The Confidence Test may be run run directly from the diskette by typing:

                                A:CONF_TST

If there are any failures, the Confidence Test will indicate such. If the card
does fail the test, check that the following have been done:
        - The card has been correctly configured through the EISA
          Configuration Utility,
        - The correct slot number was indicated,
        - The channels are connected to properly terminated cable segments,
        - The interrupt selection being used by the Elite32 card is not
          being used by another adapter.
