The Gilman Street Project is an asset to the City of Berkeley. It¨
provides a creative outlet, a place to hang out, and a chance to get¨
involved in projects, musical and otherwise.

I was one of the main show Coordinators at Gilman St.~for over a year,¨
and helped up to 40 bands a month perform there, many of whose members¨
were local kids. I still attend shows occasionally.

Considering that hundreds of people pass through Gilman St.~Project's¨
door ever weekend, there were remarkably few serious problems. 

Very nearly all of the serious problems requiring police intervention¨
during my 18 months coordinating shows were caused by out-of-towners,¨
usually much older, who used the Gilman St.~Project attendees as an¨
easy target for abuse. Gilman St.~Project's reputation as an¨
alternative for underground youth is literally nation-wide, so it's¨
not surprising that it became a target for groups such as racist¨
skinheads.

The Gilman St.~Project deserves Berkeley's support.
