Why I hate MONDO 2000 Their attractiveness is due to (nearly) articulating their need and desire for a radical culture not based upon heirarchy and consumption, that acknowledges pleasure and beauty. However actual emphasis is form over content (overblown magazine production, $8000 vid setup considered inexpensive, etc). Their experiences extend from existant privilege. They are driven by fear; constantly congratulating themselves and patting each other on the back. If they stopped, they would have nothing else. Afraid of leaving the bright room of their own enthusiasm. They produce nothing; everything is a synthesis, at best, of things obtained elsewhere, if it is not simply imported. They are in the same position as automobile owners in 1900, and have the same overall effect. "Techno" is in fact "technology"; access requires wealth, as always. So conveniently ("cooincidentally") plays into the worst of the consumptive status quo. "Mainstream" is not a thing, it is a non-thing -- the thing that is not "us". Saving the world is usually suspicious activity. It is obsessed with surface, style. No mention or care is given to what happens when their toys break or need repair or maintenance.
