If you can, drop it off at Cygnus Support. 1937 Landings Drive,
Mtn. View. 903-1400. If you need directions, ask.

Or you can drop it off at my apt in SF. 55 Rondel, in the Mission.

I will install it MOnday AM or very early afternoon if I have your modem by
then.

PS: your line is in.

FINAL STEPS --

@1: FILL OUT THIS (new, sorry) FORM
@2: ONCE YOU RETURN THE FILLED-OUT FORM:
@3: WHEN YOUR CONNECTION TO TLG IS WORKING:
@4: IMPORTANT -- READ THIS!

Congratulations on choosing The Little Garden, we hope think you'll
be pleased.

You received this because: you've read the FAQ and filled out the order
form. You know basically what we're up to, and are reasonably sure you
have the necessary parts and pieces.

It's time to start creating your connection, by exchanging basic
info (contact, billing, subnet, etc). At the end of this file you'll
find a short, to the point form that (1) gives YOU information (which
POP you'll connect to, your subnet, etc) and (2) provides US with
contact information.

@1: BEFORE YOU FILL OUT THIS FORM:

You need to have the telephone line installed at the TLG POP.
How to do this is covered in the FAQ file. When you know the
phone number, complete the form and send it to us.

@2: ONCE YOU RETURN THE FILLED-OUT FORM:

TLG will bill you for the INSTALL portion, including labor and
router port as applicable. This is payable immediately; prepayment
is not too soon. TLG runs at low overhead so prompt payment is
    appreciated!

We (you and TLG) can then start securing the connection. Phone
lines can be installed at this time. Deliver necessary equipment
to TLG for installation at our POP (modem, DSU, etc).

@3: WHEN YOUR CONNECTION TO TLG IS WORKING:

Defined here as, we can repeatably pass IP packets between your
system and our routers. You may not have complete yet the
following: DNS, domain-name registration, external network
publishing (NACRs and the like); all of your basic services
(Telnet, FTP, etc). It does include PING.

AT THIS TIME, your billing for monthly TLG services will begin.
TLG billing starts at the first of the month, and is payable
upon receipt. Unless otherwise arranged, we bill you ahead for
three months of service, except for 56K and above, for which
we bill monthly. If you want other arrangements, please let us
    know AHEAD OF TIME.

Your first month is treated specially. First, the turn-on/billing
time is rounded up to the nearest 1/4th month; ie. if you were
connected on the 3rd of the month, we'd round that up to the
7th, and bill you for 3/4ths of a month. From them on, billing
is done on the first of the month.

@4: IMPORTANT -- READ THIS!

This is the Bad Stuff no one wants to think about, most of all TLG. We
haven't had to do this yet, lucky us. We will glady make specific
arrangements that override these things, such as payment schedule
changes, etc.

INSTALL FEES ARE DUE IMMEDIATELY UPON RECEIPT OF THE BILL -- we
reserve the right to stall or stop installation if the install bill
is not paid promptly. INSTALL FEES ARE NOT REFUNDABLE. Installation
fees cover our labor, and the actual cost of providing your
connection. Though we may make exception in certain cases, as they
come up.

WE WILL KEEP YOUR EQUIPMENT IN CASE OF NON-PAYMENT.

SERVICE MAY BE CUT OFF after a bill becomes 90 days past due. It is
the members responsibility to keep track of this!

re: modems

V.FAST seems reasonbly stable. We've got some Microcoms in the net now,
they seem to work though no stats yet. Two people with V.FAST (one Hayes,
other I don't recall) have had problems staying connected; one keeps falling
back to v.32bis. It may be a mite early for them yet.

Tghe proprietary 16,800 baud v.32bis extentsions seem OK. ZyXELs especially.
They run abuot $290. Intel and AT&T remain the winner low-end 14,400 modems
at about $150 retail. Your call.

My apologies for the late, and sporadic, replies. We're victims of our
own sucess, I guess, and were not prepared for the amount of interest we're
generating. New installs ahve suffered. Once I get started it's not a

I'll go over some points in your order here.

#!! EXPERTISE/EXPERIENCE
#:e [4] IP networking basics (IP addresses vs. domain names, etc).
#:e [3] Establishing the modem link.
#:e [4] Installing/configuring/debugging SLIP/PPP.
#:e [3] Can make routing work.
#:e [4] Can configure/debug DNS.

Sounds just fine. As you probably guessed, we're not so much worried that
you already know all there is to know; nearly no one does, its not like
putting a machine on the Internet is common knowledge. We're just
checking that you have what *you* think is sufficient expertise. We'll
of course help you will all phases of the connection. Just ask. There
are no "dumb" questions, a lot of this is arcane.

#!! HOST SOFTWARE
#oa [X] Linux
#oa [X] FreeBSD
#oaw1-2 [X] Windows 3.1 with Winsock (note1)
#oa [X] Macintosh Mac TCP/IP (note1)
#oaw2-2 [X] I understand Macintosh/Windows may have limited services.

If you need help with Linux, we can point you at some TL Gmembers who
are running Linux and likely went through what you will. I've also put
up Trumpet Winsock, likely you won't have any trouble with this setup.

#!! LINE PROTOCOL
#ob [X] I will use PPP.

Like I said, ask if you need anything with this.

#!! (domain) NAMES AND (ip) ADDRESSES
#h [X] I'd like TLG to help me set up my domain name.
#h [X] I'd like TLG to do secondary name service.

No problem. It's quite easy, and we can do it once you have the IP part
up.

#!! PHONE LINES
#pr [X] I have residential service at my site.
#pl1-3 [X] SF POPs are accessible.

Perfect. Our SF POP is right on the T1 backbone and performance is excellent.

#!! NSFNET ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY
#n [X] I understand the NSFnet Acceptable Use Policy.
#n [ ] I understand which of my traffic NSFnet AUP applies to.
#n [X] I agree to follow NSFnet AUP for my traffic crossing NSFnet.

> [ ] I understand which of my traffic NSFnet AUP applies to.

Ha! As if anyone does! :-) Welcome to the club...

Actually, it's not as awful as it was once thought. If you have "legitimate"
business with someone on an NSF-net connected site (school, etc) then
your traffic is automtically blessed. The only thing specifically dis-allowed is
essentially "scamming" commercial traffic through an NSF-funded network.
In practice tyou have to be *trying* to do this.

We put this in as a disclaimer, as do mostervice providers. It was more of
an issue a few years back. TLG has no restrictions on use of our
network.

The next message will contain the final "paperwork" steps. When you return
that form, the install starts. Once your line is in, and I get your modem,
you can be on the air within a day.

I just cc'd you on the start of a new order, just FYI, so you can see how Ive been handling them.
When I get their order form, I save it in /tlg/orders (for no
good reason) then reply by:

:r !grep \^\# /tlg/orders/(file).order

then replying... then assign a net number, etc. The process is
written in /tlg/workd/new.

Just thought I'd show you what I've been up to here.

I'll include the information below. The address etc is on the FAQ.
Remember to tell the installer its for "RGnet, Suite 3075" so the
building management people don't get confused.

FINAL STEPS --

@1: FILL OUT THIS (new, sorry) FORM
@2: ONCE YOU RETURN THE FILLED-OUT FORM:
@3: WHEN YOUR CONNECTION TO TLG IS WORKING:
@4: IMPORTANT -- READ THIS!

@4: IMPORTANT -- READ THIS!

T H E L I T T L E G A R D E N

return this ENTIRE form to: admin@tlg.org (You can delete the dashed

it will be posted to a contact list available to little garden

Great!

re: helpign out. It's been spotty, mainly because I've not been real good
about setting things up to facilitate it. Two areas are: helpign newbies with
SLIP/PPP, DNS etc, and the other is more ongoing, like developing some
free SNMP tools, that sort of thing.

We try to be very clear opn costs. The recurring charges willb e simpyl what you
pay for lines, and our $325. We don't charge for DNS, etc. Nothing hidden.

ie. synchronous board. I assume you'll be using BSDI?

> Once the line is installed, and operational, can it be upgraded to a T-1? Or,

The hardware isn't compatible. You'll need to get a router and T1 DSUs, which
run about $1200 each. Not cheap. And a new line. It hasn't happened yet, but
I will give you a substantial break on the install fee, as you'll be using
a new T1 port but giving up a 56K port which I can reassign.

I know little about NNTP, specifically. We do however have a site that will
provide you with NNTP for free or mere cost recovery.

Be wary... it's a big load. You need driver support, not insubstantial. The
only one I'm aware of is described in the FAQ.

A good start is to go through our order-form, whioch you can obtain via

(Great zine!)

I'm cc'ing another TLG person who should be able to tell you what
you need re: FirstClass BBS on the internet. It's outside my area of expertise.

Take a look at our FAQs too, even the 56K/T1 FA, even if
you're not likely to use that levvel service, as it contains lots of
hints as to how this stuff all works. We also have how-to
docs on our FTP server. If you have any other questions, ask!

Thanks for your order form. I've been utterly swamped here, and didn't have
a chance to reply to your question re: consulting services. I hope someone
contacted you about it; I forwarded your query onto the TLG membership
list.

Let's go over some details...

#!! EXPERTISE/EXPERIENCE
#:e	[3]	IP networking basics (IP addresses vs. domain names, etc).
#:e	[1]	Establishing the modem link.
#:e	[3]	Installing/configuring/debugging SLIP/PPP.
#:e	[4]	Can make routing work.
#:e	[4]	Can configure/debug DNS.

ALl looks fine. As you might have guessed, we're mainly trying to make sure
that *you* are comfortable with what you need to know. We'll of course help
you with all phases of the connection.

#!! HOST SOFTWARE
#oa	[X]	SunOS/Solaris
#oa	[X]	Macintosh Mac TCP/IP (note1)
#oaw2-2	[X]	I understand Macintosh/Windows may have limited services.

With the Sun machine, you'll have all you need as far as software and
services. We also can point you to people who can help.

#!! LINE PROTOCOL
#ob	[X]	I will use uncompressed SLIP.
#ob	[X]	I will use PPP.

Neither are a problem.

#!! (domain) NAMES AND (ip) ADDRESSES
#h	[X]	I now/recently have/had direct Internet service.
#h	[X]	I'd like TLG to help me set up my domain name.
#h	[X]	I'd like TLG to do secondary name service.

Should not be any problem.

#!! PHONE LINES
#pr	[X]	I have residential service at my site.
#pl1-3	[X]	SF POPs are accessible.
#pl2-3	[X]	Mtn. View POP is accessible.

You should pick the one that's a "local call". Both are T1-connected sites,
so performance won't be an issue.

#!! NSFNET ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY
#n	[ ]	I understand the NSFnet Acceptable Use Policy.
#n [ ] I understand which of my traffic NSFnet AUP applies to.
#n [ ] I agree to follow NSFnet AUP for my traffic crossing NSFnet.

This is not as daunting as it sounds. Mostly it's a disclaimer on our part.
Short of outright "scamming" commercial packets across an NSF-funded network,
it's not areal-world worry. In 85 it was. In 94 it's not. We can talk
details if you need.

Basically, when you give the go-ahead, I'll send you the final details. If
you have any fuirther questions, just ask!

I set it to 140.174.155.1 for now. It really doesnt matter though
-- as all traffic for 140.174.155.XX is routed to your modem. Note it takes
a minute to start routing.

Your link was just installed, and you should be on-the-air... Your
modem should auto-answer, and at that point what you get depends
on what we arranged:

 * Raw PPP as soon as "CD" goes true on the modem.

When you get the "CONNECT" message from your modem, wait 10 seconds
(secret information: "CONNECT" status is *not necessarily simultaneous*
on both modems...) start your SLIP or PPP driver, however you do
that.

You should be able to immediately ping the "next hop" address, as
given in your Form. If you cannot do that, DO NOT PROCEED UNTIL
YOU CAN. Likely things to check: baud rate to modem correct? [check
fixed DTE vs. variable] Default route correct? [Modem TX light
should blink every ping] Your interface IP correct [Modem Tx blinks,
followed by Rx blink, but no ping packet received]

Try TELNET to that same "next hop" address. All you want to see
is, do you get the "Login:" prompt. If telnet says "Connected to..."
and "Escape character is..." but you SEE NO PROMPT it is very likely
yu have COMPRESSION MISMATCH. Try changing your end first. [Ping
uses UDP packets, which are never compressed. TELNET opens the
connection with UDP, then switches to TCP -- which is compressed,
and if incorrect, will fail]

IMPORTANT TRIVIA: Even if you connect first time (right), it will
take up to 60 full clock seconds for your "up" status to ripple
throughout the TLG network. In other words, once you connect, ping,
telnet etc, and you can't talk to the outside world, don't panic
-- wait a minute or two. If it persists double check your routing
[try traceroute, make sure it goes out a reasonable path] before
complaining.

Congratulations!
