via seiden:
i've got a guy who claims to be interested in housing an east bay
pop.

he's in hayward.

he's rein@pyramid.com. (pronounced like Rhine).

this seems like a good location because it's reachable from a lot
of the east bay that isn't a local call to sf1.

i sent him the general posting, talked to him on the phone, and
said we'd take it from there a bit later.

Hi,

Adam Fast told me I should get in touch with you folk, so
that's what I'm doing. (Adam mentioned Toad Hall-- is that the
toad.com of cypherpunks fame? if not, then you toad.com folk please
disregard this message.)

I hope to be able to set up an internet cooperative living
thing in Berkeley (close to campus, I'm a student there) with a 56
kbps connection through TLG.

I've written up a little intro-blurb which I'm going to send
out to people I know in Berkeley, and see how that goes, and set up an
e-list to hash out some issues before we get started.

Comments? Advice? Suggestions? I'm hoping to keep the price
down to 350/room + 100/person. That seems appropriate, to me, but I
don't know how *POSSIBLE* that is.

Thanks,

	Sameer

(What follows is my proto-blurb)
- -------------------------------------------

Subject: Direct inet to your home?

I may have already talked to you about this stuff, or I may
not have done so. In any case, tell me what you think.

If you have any friends who might be interested, tell me who
it is, and I'll send 'em this invitation. At this stage I'd like to
keep things relatively small, but once we get a little bit of
ground-work done, a post to ba.general and ucb.general would be good,
as well as posts to sfraves, cypherpunks, exi-bay, and maybe some
other lists.

What I'm planning for the fall of '94 is an internet
cooperative living situation, also known as a NEXUS. It's a pretty
simple concept. I want a direct internet feed to my home. I can't
afford a direct internet feed, but if the feed is shared among a few
people, then it's very possible.
Expanding further, what's possible through the NEXUS is the
formation of a NEXUS-network-- a network of NEXI across the globe, to
"hardwire the gaia consciousness," to make a truly digital underground
economy possible, to establish a virtual libertarian city-state. There
is a *lot* of potential for this NEXUS-network, but right now I think
the goal should just be set to have an inet-house in Berkeley.

	My target price is 350/room + 100/person. (I.e. 450 for a
single room per person, 275 for a double room per person) I don't know
whether this is possible-- I don't really know what housing costs are
like around here... Internet houses, Adam Fast tells me, are in
existence in San Fransicso and Santa Cruz.

The Little Garden provides internet connections at 56 kbps for
only 325/month. The biggest expense, I think, will be the hardware.
Routers, CSU/DSU, etc. Adam gives me an estimate of 4k for the
equipment. That's a bit much-- hopefully through gutter-tech we can
pull off something cheaper. Maybe the TLG folk can give us some
pointers to cheap equipment. (I've talked with Tom Jennings, he's a
really good guy..)

If you're interested, reply to this message, and I'll throw
you on the startup NEXUS-Berkeley mailing list. At this point I want
to leave the list semi-private until more details can be worked out
for a more public announcement in other forums, such as ba.* and some
e-lists.

What say you? Wanna be wired? Wanna take part in the next
revolution of networking? (ARPANet [the precursor to the internet] was
started by about 11 or so people, so I hear, in a similar fashion.)

Peace,
	Sameer
