The Little Garden News for May 93 Regarding our arranging for new IP network services: hurry up and wait. A lot of learning and information gathering has happened in the last month, but most of it hasn't produced direct effect yet. Basically, we have a lot of options, and we're plowing through them. It is a slow process, but we're working on it basically every day. News. The TLG 3COM router located at TIS became unreliable. Stu had to go wiggle cards and connectors to make it work. It had a propensity for waiting until 5:00pm to break. A move is afoot to replace it with a new box. nos2 in Toad Hall had another one of it's multi-day tantrums, requiring rebooting about 10 times in 48 hours, but has been just fine and dandy since then. Failure mode is unknown. The replace-NOS-with-BSD project is on hold while I persue the IP provider solution. For those of you connected to 814 University's Portmaster: we foolishly allocated only three bits of "subnet" for the SLIP subnet. Since there's 7 members on it, we're about to run out. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Oh well. We have a couple of solutions, the most likely of which is to simply change the link SLIP addresses. We will need to do this within a few weeks. It will mean you'll have to change your IFCONFIG for your SLIP link. PPP links probably won't matter, though during the changeover process we'll probably break your modem connection when I do the RESET PORT command. There will be ample warning on this. Well that's all this month. The usual CONTACT and WORLD map follows. Hack 'em out and glue them to your wall. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Little Garden Network: Contacts List, May 93 In case of trouble within TLG (routers down, etc) please contact Tom Jennings first.
