Another brief monthly update and new contact information for The Little Garden. March 1993. Joe Arceneaux (gnu-age.com) has dropped out of the little garden. Roger Klorese is coming online using his port. Mark Seiden has joined us, connecting from Palo Alto. The hardware at Toad Hall is being rearranged and phone lines moved to the new 25-pair installed the first week in January. This will cause some interruption of service the 2nd week of March, hopefully all on Monday 8 March, and hopefully only for mere minutes. The little garden is slowly heading towards paying it's own way. Palo Alto members are connected to Cygnus in Mtn. View courtesy Jim Wilson's personally-paid-for 56K leased line; starting this month $10 from each Palo Alto TLG member goes to Jim to pay for this. The idea is once the Portmaster there is in full use (10 ports) we'll be paying about 80 - 90% of that 56K leased line bill. The 386BSD box at Toad Hall being tested as a router replacement for NOS has been very reliable, with the existing problem of the sliplogin not noticing carrier loss. Once this is solved new routers will be 386BSD, and later the existing NOS will be replaced with it. Unlike previous months, I am one router box ahead -- ready and burned in. Those of you via PA will recall the utterly flakey NOS box there... it went from out of the box into the field. Not Good. The new plan is to stay ahead by one box. This has already paid off -- during burnin, the new box flaked after three days -- incorrect extended CMOS RAM settings (clock speed) caused "bad memory" errors. Found and fixed in burn-in. This month also is the first payment on the loan from John Gilmore to buy one box ahead. Finances are arranged to "break even"; this month there is a $20 underrun, due to the two new monthly payments (leased line fee and loan repayment) and loss of one TLG member out of Toad Hall. This is offset by the fact that that very loss allows Roger's hardware fee to sit as I get to reuse Joe Arceneaux's port. We're in good shape, though the margins are tight! Just this week I've moved to a new apt in the Mission district of San Francisco. My previous arrangements were a burden on my life, now complete. Sorry for the long text. Follows is updated, corrected contact info and IP map. The Little Garden Network: Contacts List, March 93 There are two mailing lists for the-little-garden.
