\centerline{\hl Zines, Music, all that stuff}

These aren't meant to be ``reviews'', where we tell you what's¨
``good'' and ``bad'', but descriptions of things we think are¨
worth looking at from a homo-punk perspective. If you see¨
anything you think others should know about, either send it in or¨
write it up and tell us! There's a lot of things that should be¨
in here and aren't. We get lots of zines here, especially, and¨
many SHOULD be reviewed, but there simply isn't time or space.¨
The one thing that always holds up HC production is doing these¨
``reviews'', so send them in like you'd send in a letter or¨
something.

{\entry TRAGIC MULATTO Chartreuse Toulouse} (Alternative¨
Tentacles) Another great record from a totally underrated SF¨
band. Local reviewers don't know what to do with them. They get¨
put in all sorts of stupid categories, none of which make any¨
sense (the latest was ``art rock''!)

Here's my categorization: TMs music is very tight, complex, and¨
intricate without going overboard (unlike NO MEANS NO -- whose¨
music ends up as technical indulgences lost on non-musicians like¨
me). It ain't hardcore -- it's too rich practiced, though it's¨
grungy in the right way. It ain't rock either -- though they do¨
some covers (like you ain't never heard) -- Jimi Hendricks' I¨
DONT MIND in this case. Two drummers, Mark and Bambi (ex-Shred¨
Pit roomie -- hi Bambi!). Vocals are mainly Gail, who also plays¨
sex I mean sax, and tuba. (Bambi and Gail's girlfriend Lisa¨
(another ex-Shred O' Dignity roomie!) are/were also in¨
MUDWIMMIN.)

Gail has a scary, incredible voice, and with the bizarre lyrics,¨
the stage weirdness, the first thing you think of is {\it sex}.¨
If you'd see them perform you'd understand -- and understand also¨
why the local, mainly straight press, (in more than one sense of¨
the word) have a hard time figuring out what is going on. They¨
get hung up on the wrong parts. They see some too-weird people on¨
stage, sexually explicit (and rude) behaviour, and make all the¨
wrong assumptions, and totally miss the deadpan jokes and¨
innuendos, and in general (and as usual) see only what they wanna¨
see. Too bad, their loss. (Well, ours (and TMs) too -- I think¨
it's also why there aren't as many gay/homopunk types at their¨
shows -- it's not in the line of P.C. sex politics.) Lots of the¨
songs refer to places and things in SF, parts of the local¨
scenery (like bike messengers, local dyke bars, etc) that is lost¨
on many people, but otherwise adds another element if you do.

Basically, I think it's too sophisticated for most people (how's¨
that for judgemental). TM is my favorite band, local or not,¨
period. i'll even go to shows at Dog Penis' house to see them! ¨

{\entry BULLSHIT MONTHLY} (175 5th Ave \#2589, New York NY 10010)¨
Price varies from 35\cents\ for the current issue, up to \$1 for¨
back issues. Prolly send a buck and you'll get some samples.

Mike Bullshit is the editor of BSM, a large-format 8 page¨
definitely punk-rock zine, of reviews, opinion, news, graphics,¨
cartoons\dots all done in a dense but readable style. There's¨
something about Mike's attitude that makes you like this thing,¨
besides the mix of reviews and commentary. He's also in the band¨
GO!, who's 7" is mentioned elsewhere in this column.

He's also been putting on shows at ABC NO RIO (whose latest zine¨
is not reviewed this issue, due only to lack of reviewers \&¨
time!), a notoriously cool and supportive place, and specifically¨
not booking sexist, racist and homophobic bands. Write to Mike¨
for info on these shows.

And on top of it all, my copy of \#21 came with one part outlined¨
in red: ``BSM is proud to be gay owned and operated. It's better¨
to be hated for what you are than loved for who you're not.''¨
There's an interview with him in JERSEY BEAT \#39. Basically,¨
Mike just had enough. He got a lot of the stuff I got -- why are¨
you bringing this up, there's no need to, this is punk, etc, all¨
the shit straight ``friends'' do to avoid the subject. My guess¨
is that there's now the beginnings of real support out there for¨
people to come out.

It's too bad you have to work so hard and be so articulate just¨
to live your life. But the more people do it, the easier it gets¨
for everyone else who follows. Ten cheers for Mike in coming out¨
in what's generally a pretty homophobic environment (punk rock¨
shit).

ANYWAYS -- Also included in BSM is a record trade list,¨
have/want. I'm not into record collecting so no comment here. ¨

{\entry GOD IS AN ASSHOLE} \#5 (The lesbian/gay rights issue)¨
(S.M. Steppenwolf, 1901 7th St, Long Beach CA 90813) 2 stamps.¨
Wow! A straight punk type person actually went and on his own,¨
did a lez/fag issue of a zine! I have nothing but respect for¨
someone who is confident enough to not worry about what the¨
dickheads will think. It seems so obvious to me, (and¨
Steppenwolf) that you don't expect only black people to confront¨
racist shit, and you don't expect only homos to confront¨
homophobic shit. Obviously it's not obvious!

Hell, Steppenwolf's got his shit together (on paper at least!)¨
more than many gay people I know. He also writes about an ACT/UP¨
demo he attended, and what sorta shit went down. There's a¨
letters column, a short article on the exploitation of skating,¨
stuf fon recycling (he works at a recycling center), a flyer for¨
a Punk Picnic (what a cool idea!), stolen cartoons, reviews and¨
collages. Other issues of GOD IS AN ASSHOLS have other themes.¨
Don't put the name on the envelope, the PO won't like it.

Of all the zines I have received, this one is in my ``KEEP''¨
pile. \by{tj}

{\entry TASTE OF LATEX} \#1 (Box 460122, San Francisco CA¨
94146-0122) \$3 By Lily Braindrop, who you may know from her¨
MAXIMUMROCKNROLL column and elsewhere. This is the first issue of¨
a rag that's gonna be big. It's a bit pricey for 24 pages, but¨
the format is large and I'm sure will get filled out once it¨
starts rolling.

This is a positive-sex, polysexual/multi-orientation zine.¨
Erotica with a social, non-preachy attitude, with Mz. Lily¨
solidly walking that fine line.

There's an editorial by Mz. Lily herself on the how and why of¨
TOL; a basic article on S\&M; a great butch/femme story with a¨
surprise ending; an interview with Annie Sprinkle; sexy photos of¨
men and women; and a How To on answering personals.

I think it's safe to say that any sex-positive art, photos,¨
writing, whatever would be seriously considered for upcoming¨
issues, gay, straight, whatever. \by{tj}

{\entry THE WORLD IN SHREDS -- PART 4: NEW JERSEY} (Blacklist¨
Mailorder, 181 Shipley, San Francisco CA 94107) \$2.40 +¨
90\cents\ postage. A 7" six song compilation, with THE UNDEAD,¨
P.E.D., STICKS AND STONES, SEPARATE PEACE, A PRIORI, and last and¨
definitely not least, PARASITES.

The music is all pretty much post-punk pop-punk (huh?). The only¨
song I don't care much for is P.E.D.s ``I AM SAM''; it's a¨
novelty song, white-boy rap with sampling. Too slick for me. They¨
are capable of better. The rest is really great, the songs are¨
stylistically close (a sign of a good comp), with THE UNDEAD, A¨
PRIORI and PARASITES my favorites.

The PARASITES' ``Male call'' was my favorite song on the JDs TOP¨
TEN HOMOCORE HITS tape, reviewed in HC\#5. \by{tj}

{\entry SISTER NOBODY} (2336 Market St \#128, San Francisco CA¨
94114) \$1. AARGH!!! Someone took my SISTER NOBODY to review, and¨
they never did it. Maybe they will for \#7?

SISTER NOBODY is one of the better local zines. It's been months¨
since I've seen it, so I can't tell you exactly what's in it, but¨
G.B. Jones and Bruce LaBruce (of JDs zine) wrote about their¨
summer here in SF. Some cool artwork. Rants and articles. Music¨
stuff. And a totally different attitude and feel from any other¨
zine. Refreshingly so. Get it!

And to wheever has my copy -- please return it! Preferably with a¨
review. \by{tj}

{\entry PAVEMENT OF SURFACE} \#4 (c/o Queer Riot Press, 2336¨
Market St \#133, San Francisco CA 94114) \$1 Caffeine Eris homo¨
butthole fnord Karen Elliot caffeine you freak out out damned¨
spots are driving Bud away faggots and orgone liberation¨
Nihilsonism TOPY dreammachine kit instructions faggots rioting¨
caffeine, caffeine police germ warfare Germs industrial workers¨
of the world quit quasiantierisianilluminatiism caffeine,¨
caffeine, fucking caffeine!

Erisian propaganda of the most insidious sort. Even if you simply¨
glance at it and throw it away, you have been effected. P.O.S.¨
has more of an edge these days, is it the caffeine or something¨
else? This one is 48 pages (!), filled with some of the best¨
collages, reichian stuff, including complete dreammachine plans¨
(incl. pattern for cutting out the slots), some Temple Ov Psychic¨
Youth stuff, the intense psychedelia of Luke Breckon, some poetry¨
and weird essayettes.

Deke is also the singer for COMRADES IN ARMS, the first all-fag¨
punk rock band. (If they're wrong, the world would like to know¨
-- send hard evidence.) Explicit fag lyrics that even Jimmy¨
Somerville couldn't get away with. I was hoping there'd be more¨
on this subject but no one wrote about it. No one sent pictures.¨
Boohoo. (I did tape it however.) BUT ANYWAYS -- I'm off the¨
subject. \by{tj}

\bar

{\entry YOUTH LIB} \#2 (Syndicat Des Eleves, 2035 Boulevard
St.- Laurent, Montreal Quebec H2X 2T3, CANADA) \$1 (Don't forget¨
letters are 30\cents\ to Canada) A youth liberation zine,¨
composed mostly of articles and news clippings as well as lots of¨
practical information for kids wanting to get out of their¨
current situation -- how to run away, contact info, stories about¨
homophobia, racism and sexism, schools (gets lots of coverage for¨
obvious reasons), drugs used on ``hyperactive'' (read: uppity)¨
kids, a list of anti-racist skin groups (lots of runaway kids are¨
skinheads/vice versa), and a list of gay zines/groups. Mostly¨
english, some in french.

It's a great zine. When I look at it it's kinda depressing in a¨
way, as it reminds me of how terrible it was for me to be a kid.¨
But this zine has got lots of cool shit, it's not negative at¨
all. I hope they continue\dots \by{tj}

\bar

{\entry PUNK BEAT} \#1 -- \#2 (Joe Britz, 151 First Ave Box A,¨
New York NY 10003) \$1? A homo-punk zine/newsletter. I'm confused¨
as to which is the first issue, though it doesn't matter. One is¨
large format 6 pages. There's an opinion/news column (dirt on¨
that asshole Gerard Cosloy, who released the homophobic FROGS lp,¨
was fired!; good insight into the so-called ``Rooney affair'' re:¨
censorship. HUNK BEAT, ``who's hot in clubland'', photos of¨
shirtless band members. This is thr ``wrestling'' theme issue --¨
original hot fiction and a some photos.

The other issue is thr ``Punks in Bondage'' issue, zine format,¨
and definitely erotic. Computer-scanned photos, 8 or more steamy¨
stories (though jail is simply scary -- bondage is fun, but cops¨
are not!) (I'd love to have a copy of the photo on the READING¨
LIST page!)

This is for boys only, and it is hot. I can't wait for the next¨
one! I will not be lending this zine out! \by{tj}

{\entry THE ADVENTURES OF DOLO R\^OMY IN THE UNDERGROUND CITY}¨
(Dolo Blue Graphics, Box 80023, MInneapolis MN 55409) \$4. By¨
Karen Platt. Dolo R\^omy,
foxy drifter-adventurer-heartbreaker-dyke-babe,
whilst searching for her missing pal, Rawto, stumbles upon the¨
world's best kept secret -- THE UNDERGROUND CITY OF WOMEN.¨
Established in 1973, the city thrives beneath St. Louis, teeming¨
with 60,000 swingin' dykes -- in R\^omy's words ``They've got¨
everything here, except men and traffic.'' But there's trouble in¨
paradise -- a coup's a brewin', and R\^omy takes it upon herself¨
to save the day. Okay, so there's the general idea, but there's¨
so much more. Lots of sex for one thing and loads of caustic wit.¨
The real genius here is Platt's portrayal of the secret city and¨
the women in it. This is not utopia. There are police and an¨
army, power struggles, and other general stupidity, just like¨
above ground and R\^omy confronts it all. I want a date with her.¨
No, maybe I want a date with Platt. Anyhow, the drawings are not¨
the usual comic book fare -- I guess I won't even try to describe¨
it, just way cool. Coming soon: DOLO R\^OMY IN ``SET A BAD, BAD¨
EXAMPLE''. You know you want it. \by{Laura}

{\entry ROCK AGAINST SEXISM} Vol. 3 No. 1 (Basement, 464 Harrison¨
Ave., Boston, Mass 02118) \$1. Excellent integrated¨
gay/straight/girl/boy 'zine with a healthy emphasis on direct¨
action. This issue has interviews with Mecca Normal and our own¨
HOMOCORE, a reprint of New Lavender Panthers' ``Don't Be Gay''¨
(the most intelligent thing ever written on punk/sex/politics),¨
accounts of direct actions in the Boston area, photos of boys in¨
skirts, and many witty small photo/graphic bits. I especially¨
liked the illustrated guide for making a condom into a dental dam¨
thing for safe girlie tongue sex, reprinted from the British¨
anarcho-fem 'zine Shocking Pink. There are also very detailed¨
reviews of shows (not exclusively Boston), records, and 'zines.¨
Printed on the kind of paper that doesn't go yellow right away,¨
or rub ink off onto your fingers. A fun and rambunctious zine, by¨
people who know that fighting sexism means more than calling for¨
equal paternity leave. \by{greta}

{\entry PUNCHLINE} \#4 (John Yates P.O.Box 11458, SF CA 94101)¨
\$1. John definitely has the software that makes those round¨
circle graphics. This issue is the Flags-R-Us issue; with¨
editorial and Jello Biafra interview investigating certain¨
aspects of icon worship, symbolism, and patriotism. This is first¨
and foremost a 'zine of impeccable graphics, by John Yates, Doug¨
Minkler, Jos Sances, Winston Smith, Martin Sprouse, and fabulous¨
comic by Jason Traeger. Every page is a centerfold, and you can't¨
really argue with the Ignorance-Apathy-War-Are-Bad politics. It¨
interests me, though, that many of these guys have adopted the¨
seamless, voice of authority, absolutely no ragged edges graphic¨
style that is part of the criticized organism. Yeah, yeah, it's¨
de-construction, and using the language of the regime to subvert¨
their intentions, etc. But at a certain point this approach falls¨
over its own preponderance, and becomes an exercise in scolding.¨
I think that volleying these symbols back and forth with the¨
capitalist/war institutions reflects a little icon worship of its¨
own. Regardless, PUNCHLINE is an excellent publication, and I¨
have been even more enthusiastic about other issues. (Different¨
theme each issue.) \by{greta}

{\entry ASSAULT WITH INTENT TO FREE} \#7 (P.O. Box 1484, Oxford¨
MS 38655) \$1.50 ppd. This 'zine is packed full of great music¨
info and interviews with mostly boy bands, interesting article on¨
anarchy and punk historical stuff, reviews of shows (I couldn't¨
find Oxford on the map, but these people seem to go to shows¨
regularly in three or four other states\dots). The best is the¨
interview by punks of Richard Barrett, head of the Nationalist¨
Movement. He says his usual idiotic party line and is generally¨
revealed as a fool. There are 53 record reviews, all in¨
alphabetical order, of many many bands. Reviewers loved BAD¨
BRAINS and WRECKING CREW, which made me wonder if they either¨
don't know the words, or maybe fagbashing stuff is not as big a¨
deal to them as racist stuff. Also many 'zine reviews. ¨

{\entry MR. T EXPERIENCE} ``So long Sucker/ Zero'' (Lookout!¨
Records, P.O. Box 1000, Laytonville, CA, 95454) What can I say¨
but, I just like these guys! This little sampler is out on¨
Lookout! Records\dots another fine release. Both songs are Mr. T¨
all the way\dots power pop ecstacy. ``Sucker'' is by Dr. Frank \&¨
``Zero'' is by Jon, no doubt. If you like their earlier stuff,¨
you'll drool for this. \by{shawn}

\bar

{\entry JAWBREAKER} ``Busy/ Equalized'' (Shredder Records, 181¨
Shipley, SF, CA, 94107) Jawbreaker is one thing, of very few¨
things, that makes me realize that LA isn't totally out of it.¨
This 3-piece has been on a few comps this past year, has an¨
earlier 7" out, and now they release this 2 songer on Shredder,¨
with a full lp due in late May. I'm not sure what to ``classify''¨
them as\dots power pop/punk/rythymic/rockin like hell\dots very¨
good lyrics\dots shit- BUY IT! \by{shawn}

\bar

{\entry SAMIAM} ``I AM'' (Lookout! Records, Box 1000, Laytonville¨
CA 95454) This 4-song record comes from x-members of Soup,¨
Isocracy, \& Social Unrest, now rolled into one, with the¨
addition of the drummer. They sound very different from the¨
afore-mentioned bands. Sorta-kinda punky\dots hard but slower,¨
breaky, good vocals; Hell, some folks like em, some don't\dots ¨
oh well. ``Tired o Waiting'' \& ``Too Many Buttons'' stand out.¨
Good deal- full lp due out soon on New Red Archives Records. ¨
\by{shawn}

{\entry ``IF YOU CAN SEE THROUGH IT, IT AIN'T COFFEE''}¨
(compilation) (Very Small Records, P.O. Box 8223, Emeryville, CA,¨
94662) Fuel!, Thumper, Monsula \& Filth make up this East Bay¨
7"er out on very small records. This is excellent- get it fast,¨
as only 1200 pressed. A sampler of fuckin rockin, new sounds. ¨
oh, yeah\dots the sleeve has tattoo pix all over it- good ones,¨
even\dots \by{shawn}

{\entry SNUFF} ``Not Listening'' (Workers Playtime, 61-71 Collier¨
St, London, N1 9BE) These guys rule- NO SHIT! Take Descendents \&¨
give em a dose of espresso\dots POWER! Just get it, ok? I don't¨
wanna try \& explain what they sound like. Trust me. \by{shawn}

{\entry BAZOOKA JOE} ``Send In The Klowns'' (Headcleaner Rec\-ords,
P.O. Box 8141, Myrtle Beach, SC, 29578) Six songs from South¨
Carolina's homeboys of hardcore. This disk rips! Been out a¨
while, but these guys deserve all the plugs they get. My personal¨
fave is ``Why You, Not Me?'' \by{shawn}

\bar

{\entry GO!} ``And The Time Is Now\dots '' (Noo Yawk Rehkids, 175¨
5th ave, Ste. 2589, NY, NY, 10010) This is fuckin
hard-ass, angry hardcore. Go! has the pleasure of breaking my¨
``NY Punkrock'' cherry\dots never payed attn. to h/c from NY\dots¨
thought it was just a bunch of macho, racist shits. Go!'s record¨
label, Noo Yawk Rehkids, states, ``N.Y.R. is completely anti-racism,
anti-sexism, anti-homophobic, and anti-xenophobic.'' W/ lyrics¨
like ``Confess your sins if you expect absolution.'', ``Milk does¨
a body good!'', \& ``I'm not giving out answers of the way things¨
should be; a lot of leople are preaching, but that sure ain't¨
me.'', this band makes it. \by{shawn}

{\entry ``EXCLUSION''} (compilation) (NABATE, BP 92, 4000 Liege¨
1, Liege 1, Belgium) This is a compilation devoted to the issue¨
of feminism. Atavistic, Pleasant Valley Children, Dissent,¨
Cringer, Culture Shock, The Ex, + 8 other bands play from h/c to¨
punk to ska to industrial on this worldwide comp. It comes¨
complete with a huge foldout cover of articles and lyrics by the¨
contributing bands. The writings are good and most of the songs¨
are real good, too. A group called NABATE put this out. It's \$8¨
ppd. from NABATE or Blacklist. \by{shawn}

{\entry BOMB} ``Happy All The Time'' (Boner Records, PO Box 2081,¨
Berkeley, CA, 94702-0081) What can I say? I like Bomb\dots ¨
either you do or you can fuck off. You never know when they're¨
together or broken up, exactly who's playing in the band, or¨
where the hell they are. I think they must break up after every¨
show or something. If you haven't heard their first album yet,¨
listen to this one first. It'll set you up for the other one.¨
``Happy\dots '' has 6 trax on it, my favorite being ``Because Pan¨
Says''- yeah! They redo ``Healthfood And Heroin'', a little¨
slower this time. Also, got a new guitar player. Bomb is¨
Bomb\dots see them\dots buy their records\dots do drugs\dots ¨
have sex. \by{shawn}

\bar

{\entry FRIGHTWIG} ``Phone Sexy'' (Boner Records, PO Box 2081,¨
Berkeley, CA, 94702-0081) This is a fine album! They haven't put¨
out anything in a while, but this more than makes up for it.¨
Frightwig's another one of those bands that you never quite know¨
what the status of it is. Lynn of Dicks \& S.D.H. fame is bangin¨
for em on this one.Five tracks of power all the way. Highly¨
recommended. \by{shawn}

\bar

{\entry SABOT} ``Surface Tension'' (Slime Records, 2702 18th St,¨
SF, CA, 94110) Sabot is composed of a bassist and a drummer\dots ¨
nothing more, nothing less. Chris and Hilary know how to play¨
their instruments. Their blend is powerful and inspiring. No¨
words are spoken. The music does the talking. They like the music¨
they play, and they like playing it. It shows. The music is jazzy¨
and fast to slow and funky at times, all the while tough. The¨
jacket is very well done, with a long written piece on the back¨
by peter plate. I recommend this because it is a great album, and¨
because it is different. If you're not stuck in the proverbial¨
rut and want to expand your horizons, get it! \by{shawn}

{\entry OVO} \#7 (Box 23061, Knoxville TN 37933-1061) \$5¨
(Cash/MO only) By Trevor Blake. \#5 reviewed in HC\#5, this is¨
the promised Information Issue. OVO\#7 is incredibly well¨
conceived and executed -- the overall format, and the density and¨
intensity, reminds me (sort of) of Semiotext (e). (Which if you¨
don't have -- you should get.) It has a table of contents! (and¨
84 pages!) \#7 is about information -- as a concept but mainly¨
about exposing the information we are immersed in every day, and¨
generally from angles not usually covered. Fucking with images¨
and legality. Copyrights. Dreammachines. Fanatical christian¨
organizations tracts and artwork. A zillion weird examples and¨
detournments of ``information''. Plus stuff from people of¨
various knownness from well- to un-. Plus of course Trevor's¨
various writings throughout.

I gave the wrong price for this issue in HC\#5. It's \$5. OVO¨
comes with a short catalog of interesting stuff -- zines, tapes,¨
books, etc.

OVO\#8 will be the ``EXPERIMENTS AND EVIDENCE issue -- Oct 90 --¨
EVIDENCE: (found truths contradicting established truths)
Non-physical self-awarenesses; anomalous events; conciousness¨
outside time and space; conspiracy. EXPERIMENTS: (concept:¨
action: result: record) self; involuntary; environment;¨
expression; failure.'' Submissions welcome. \by{tj}

fourth issues, respectively. (You've got a calculator -- figure¨
it out.) Various back issues are available -- send a buck for¨
each. Damn insidious discordian zine. The only movie reviews¨
worth reading anywhere (the only person on the entire planet I¨
can watch movies with!) An article on how (and why) to kill your¨
parents. A definite anti-Bob attitude. Dozens of small, subtle¨
(and therefore much more interesting) collages. All issues¨
consist mostly of original essays and rants on various subjects,¨
and none of the usual retread subjects (thank you).

You also get to watch Ivan Stang (subgenius) and Bob Black¨
(anarcho-loudmouth) make fun of each other (and fools of them¨
selves) spread over a few issues, as they toss insults and¨
threats back and forth.

This is also my boyfriends zine, so if you don't get it I won't¨
talk to you. He lives far, far away from me, so the more money¨
you send him the sooner I can see him again. (I intentionally let¨
someone else review CWN\&O in HC\#5, for some warped sense of¨
``objectivity'' or something. Fuck that weak shit.)

Is this cryptic illuminati propaganda, or the One Sane Anchor In¨
This Raging Sea Of False Belief? (It is true that, for a while at¨
least, it was an Official Publication of T.E.S.C.!) \by{tj}

{\entry MILQUETOAST} (Jeffery Kennedy, 555 O'Farrell St \#103,¨
San Francisco CA 94102) Free, SASE. A modest foldout one-sheet¨
zine by the editor of the (now defunct) BOYSVILLE USA, since¨
moved to San Francisco (obviously). A curious mix of sexual and¨
pop images\dots on pink paper of course. Get one and see! \by{tj}
