These are not ``reviews'', they're not meant to tell you what's¨
good or bad. Musical taste is questionable anyways. The goal is¨
to just list things that might be interesting from a homopunk¨
point of view, whatever that means, plus anything else that's¨
interesting or obnoxious.

{\entry JDs Top Ten Homocore Hits} (JDs, Box 1110, Adelaide St.¨
Stn, Toronto Ontario M5C 2K5, CANADA) \$5 (NO CHECKS! CASH ONLY!)¨
The long awaited Homocore Hits tape! contains ten original songs¨
made specifically for this tape. Pretty broad mix of songs. Yo¨
DJs, buy a copy (they're too broke to give out free copies), most¨
songs are air-playable, (U.S.) no swear words etc. If you don't¨
play it, people won't hear it! Support your homo bands!!

Songs are, side 1: ``Male Call'' by NIKKI PARASITE (of NIKKI \&¨
THE PARASITES fame) with a cool pop/punk song that's definitely¨
my favorite; ``Toilet Slave Trouble'' by TOILET SLAVE, not very¨
nice people I think! ``Too Scared To Be Queer'' by BIG MAN (loud¨
mouth Mykel Board and Mark Rentzer) about macho dudes who haven't¨
got the nerve every ``out'' homo does; ``I'm Queer'' live¨
thrash/noise by NO BRAIN CELLS; unfortunately I can't make out a¨
word except when they announce the song. ``Tell Me Why'' by¨
GORSE, more noise/thrash, alas, totally unintelligible. ``Be A¨
Fag'' By SF's BOMB, now defunct; the words and guitar chords are¨
B, E, A, F, A, G!.

Side two has ``The Fairview Mall Story'' by FIFTH COLUMN, (off¨
``To Sir With Hate'' LP) narrative song about a boy who has sex¨
with an older man in a bathroom and gets caught; with G.B. Jones¨
and Bruce LaBruce of JDs infamy. THE APOSTLES do ``Forbidden¨
Love'', grim as usual, but I like their music, and this is one of¨
their best. Robt Omlit with ``Bang!'', weird sounds over words¨
about getting back at fagbashers, BANG! ``The Boy Next Door'' by¨
ACADEMY 23, slower, clean sound, sure sounds like the guy from¨
THE APOSTLES\dots And last is ``Bert'' by the hated ZUZU's¨
PETALS, another of the JDs bands.

Only complaint: no girl songs at all. Where are all the girl¨
bands? (In general, I mean.) Hiding? It's hard enough for girl¨
bands to play, never mind homo girl bands\dots\hfill{\bf TJ}

{\entry TATER TOTZ ``Alien Sleestacks From Brazil'' (There is no¨
beginning)} LP (Gasatanka Records, 1241 N. Harper Suite 6,¨
Hollywood CA 90046 USSA) Indeed. Really spooky shit. This makes¨
me wanna get ``Revolver'' when I already have th' ``White¨
Album''. I hate the BEATLES. It's just not their fault that they,¨
very rarely, gave birth to a decent song. The TOTZ make me wanna¨
check out the ever-derisive Yoko Ono.

The lineup features Jeff and Steve McDonald, Pat's Fear and¨
Ruthensmear, Trace Element and a special guest appearance by¨
Danny Bonoduce (ne\'e Partridge).

You might call this a conceptual piece. An insane amount of¨
detail about the influence of Hayley Mills and Yoko Ono on so¨
much music that it just might border on a plot.

Side one starts out rather unspeakably campy, but half way¨
through the side it starts taking you down to where the TOTZ may¨
well only know. Hot cover of ``Tomorrow Never Knows'', thus my¨
sudden need for ``Revolver'' (yeh yeh I haven't listened; like I¨
said, I've been avoiding such musical turgidity). But it really¨
takes off with ``Don't Count The Waves'' and ``Bharta's Boogie''¨
places you snugly in the pit that side two will soon invite you¨
to climb back out of. ``Bharta's Boogie'' comes in nine parts,¨
eight of which are on this vinyl tweak -- you figure out the¨
borders, if you need to and if you can and if you're on the right¨
provocative combo of drugs. Whichever you're on (or off) will be¨
exponentiated by this LP, be fairly warned.

Side two (the piece of resistance) is a cover of Ono's ``Don't¨
Worry Kyoko (Mummy's Got Her Hand In The Snow)''. In, yes,¨
\underbar{five} permutations. You can tell the specific number¨
you're listening to if you watch the vinyl, but not really¨
audially. I wouldn't bother. Just deal with the cosmic fodder as¨
best you can and throw things at the next Deadhead who tells you¨
Jerry \& Co. are the be-all and end-all of psychedelia.

Okay, so maybe you've heard this; if so, maybe you find the TOTZ¨
pass\'e. Your problem. If not, I suggest you stop at very little¨
in getting hold of a copy. You could probably research this LP's¨
material forever. Or you could just sit back and enjoy the¨
freakout. Or you could play that comatose Dead Can Dance tape¨
again. Or you could\dots\hfill {\bf Deke}

{\entry DIAMANDA GALAS ``The Litanies of Satan''} EP (Restless¨
Records, Culver City CA 90231-3628) OK, you homos, this tasty¨
piece of sheer-ly (heh) channeled possession insanity was¨
recorded in 1981. I heard a tape of it in 1987 and hit myself for¨
the next 2 \frac12 years for not making a personal reproduction¨
thereof Musical Priority \#1. I was left with gimping¨
explanations of a fading impact of being fair blown away. You¨
seen this scene.

Well, it's 1989 and ``Litanies\dots'' has finally been released¨
domestically. I know, all the umm, heat and furor is over the¨
``Masque of the Red Death'' trilogy au moment, but you'd be¨
missing out severely if you let that hide this from your ears.

``Litanies of Satan'' is a poem from a book called ``Flowers of¨
Evil'' by CHARLES BAUDELAIRE. It was one of the six or so that¨
won B. a censorship trial and a heaping helping of repression.¨
Ms. Galas' interpretive rendition (conveniently translated inside¨
the package, next to the original French the singing's in) will¨
melt your rationales and leave you to worry about an exquisitely¨
wounded reality. You gotta have it. I can tell\dots

Side two features ``Wild Women With Knives''. Yes, she really¨
means it. This LP's not for homogenized tastes. With this in¨
mind, dare to want a little mo' \dots

P.S: Of Course, you've read the mondo feature GALAS interview in¨
this summers' FORCED EXPOSURE. Just thought I'd mention¨
it\dots\hfill{\bf Deke}

{\entry BUTTHOLE SURFERS Double Live Bootleg} LP (Latino Bugger¨
Veil records (did they bootleg it themselves?), Rough Trade)¨
Bootleg quality BHS absolute goodness. Four sides of pure audial¨
nutrition. Not the vinyl to start your habit on. It's got it's¨
weaker moments as well as it's moments of transcendent¨
brilliance. Moe sez that all youse teeming Butthead masses need¨
this shit and but bad. You know they's right. Supplies are¨
limited\dots You get ten bonus songs on the tape, I don't know¨
about the CD but it's something in that bonus area. See them on¨
tour\dots heavy new studio rumors\dots I investigate¨
tomorrow\dots order this killer shit from Rough Trade. Or go back¨
to ELO SPEEDWAGON. Or Diana Summers\dots or Tom Jonestown\dots¨
or\dots\hfill{\bf Deke}

{\entry B.A.L.L. ``Bird'', ``Period (Another American Lie)''} LP¨
(Shimmy Disc, JAF Box 1187, NYC NY 10116 USSA) BALL is a feature¨
band of the ever zoned out Shimmy Disc label. Cynical zaniness¨
and twistedly sentimental little ditties give way to swellings of¨
readulterated pyschedeloid megagrunge. Not to say it doesn't come¨
across -- it'll hit ya hard right where the standardization hangs¨
out.

``Bird'' brings you a BALL reproduction of the BEATLES (argh!¨
that thang again!) suppressed ``Yesterday and Today'' record¨
cover.

If you expect boppy feel-just-groovy-fine music in an audial¨
reality, avoid this flavor like that charming Helms couple. If¨
you wanna twitch shake and deal with it by cycling through the¨
thick of the shit then you shouldn't be missing ``Bird''. Freaked¨
out overload flickers into 60's pop burlesque that'll piss off¨
sensitive liberals.

Only slightly less recommended is ``Period\dots'' The textures¨
vary a bit more herein, the roundabout takes a bit longer to¨
heave it all home. Still it's worth the wait. Some of this will¨
never leave your brain again. The transition between halves of¨
side two is fuckin' orgasmic and shit.

There's a third BALL motif out, `` Trouble Doll''. I haven't¨
heard it yet, but it's budgeted. You could just send me some of¨
that silly green shit\dots\hfill{\bf Deke}

{\entry Moral Crux} Side Effects Of Thinking LP (Polemic Records,¨
Box 1516, Moses Lake WA 98837; \$7 USA/Canada, \$9 elsewhere)¨
These guys have at least two albums out, but I lent my other one¨
out and of course it never came back. Oh well. This is hardcore¨
with melody and (gasp) intelligible lyrics. Which are somewhat¨
ordinary subjects (are we jaded) of the unjust and frequently¨
oppressive world we live in -- especially if you aren't white
male. But look! A song that mentions gay rights! Check again --¨
is this a hardcore record! Yup!

\vskip\parskip
{\narrower\obeylines\small\parskip=0pt
Talk about your rights and
talk about your freedom
if it ain't for everyone
then it ain't for none
\dots
Freedom means civil rights
Freedom means gay rights
Freedom means womens' rights
Freedom means human rights
\dots
}

Other songs are about living in this fucked up world, one that I¨
think is about a band living on the road but sure applies to just¨
general grungy urban life (``Street Noir'') and one that¨
definitely is (``Terminal Town''). There's a photo collage and¨
lyric sheet included. Write to Moral Crux at 48 ``E'' St. SW,¨
Ephrata WA 98823.\hfill{\bf TJ}

{\entry MDC} Elvis in the Rhineland LP, Metal Devil Cokes LP (R¨
Radical Records, 2440 16th St. \#103, San Francisco CA 94103) The¨
first is a live record, from a recent tour through Europe. These¨
guys are so consistently good it's scary. But someone borrowed¨
the goddamn record so I can't tell you what goddamned songs are¨
on it. But, it has a lots of songs you recognize plus new ones.¨
Also, I am usually wary of ``live'' records, cuz they usually¨
have all the bad things of a live event (crowd noise, shitty¨
sound, etc) with none of the good things. This one's real clean¨
though, and I actually use this record instead of previous ones¨
when making tapes.

When I first saw Metal Devil Cokes I thought: another so soon?¨
But what a pleasant surprise! All new songs; the first side is¨
hardcore MDC style -- ``Huddled Masses'', about racism and the¨
``history'' crap we get in school; ``White Men In Suits'', about¨
nice normal people. But ``Tofu Spaghetti''?! Fuck yeah! ``Deep in¨
the Heart (of Racist Amerikkka)'' sung to the tune of ``Deep in¨
the Heart of Texas''. ``I was a Dupe for the RCP'' tells of how¨
they got fooled into doing a benefit for ``No Business as¨
Usual'', an RCP front. (I remember the show! RCP scum!) The title¨
song is fast, hot hardcore, one of the best songs (of many good¨
ones) on the record. ``I'm a Knucklehead'' is a cleaner version¨
of a song they've been playing locally, (including the 3rd?¨
Homocore show this past summer) with Al Scwitz's kids, and a¨
bunch of other young 'uns, plus assorted weirdos. ``Something For¨
Everyone'' is my favorite, and it's basically sounds like an¨
irish folk song, not surprising since the Bedlam Rovers were¨
involved. (The Bedlam Rovers played in the Financial District on¨
St. Patricks Day to unsuspecting office drones; they got their¨
drinking songs mixed with blatant anti-landlord, anti-english and¨
other ahem partisan songs. Plus lots of us local weirdos hanging¨
around. Not your typical irish folk band, but then, this is San¨
Francisco\dots)

One song they'll catch shit for is ``Mongoloid Child'', which¨
assumes the mother of a deformed kid took drugs or something. The¨
idea is good but cause and effect should be reversed\dots Comes¨
with the usual complete lyric sheet, huge list of credits and¨
contact info. The cover art is by Jayed Scotti, of FEEDERZ fame,¨
who also did lots of the DKs record covers.\hfill{\bf TJ}

{\entry Emilio Cuberio} Death of an Asshole LP (Widowspeak¨
Productions, Box 1085, Canal St. Station, New York NY 10013-1085)¨
This guy from NYC is very rude, harsh and violent. Basically,¨
it's poetry done to music; that just doesn't begin to describe it¨
though. The first song on this record is enough to justify the¨
entire record. It's a rotating list of words, one added at a¨
time, the tells a multi-level story. After listening to it a few¨
times, I realized that only a few hundred people on the planet¨
could possibly understand all of it; you'd have to understand¨
Burrough's language-is-a-virus idea; a catholic upbringing; AIDS¨
virus transmission vectors; the pope/vatican's stance on AIDS as¨
``punishment''; catholic's suppressed sexuality; and a few other¨
things thrown in. (I wouldn't mind sticking my tongue in an alter¨
boys asshole either!) These things go on simultaneously yo see,¨
in only a few hundred words\dots

This is a very harsh record! ``This Guy Knows His Meat'' is about¨
some guy having sex with a 6 year old; do either of them know¨
what they are doing? ``Mr Officer Sir'', a story about a rape by¨
a dickheaded macho cop; anyone who's been frisked and harassed¨
physically by pigs will know some variation on this theme\dots

``\dots those that experience the X-RAY OF CIVILIZATION every¨
time they leave the house or turn on the tv or radio or pickup a¨
newspaper or suddenly realize their legs have come to a halt¨
before a red traffic light. MEAT FOR THE MASSES is the war that¨
plays and replays in the heads of members of [our] tribe; it's¨
the volume of that war that reaches epic dimensions and when the¨
person hearing it realizes they're walking in streets and subways¨
full of thousands of people who appear deaf to the sound of¨
it\dots'' (Sounds like the Situationists) Sound familiar?!

You aren't likely to find this in many record stores. According¨
to Widowspeak, it's already banned in 13 countries. Somehow it's¨
not hard to believe\dots\hfill{\bf TJ}

\bar

{\entry Lydia Lunch} Oral Fixation (Widowspeak Productions, Box¨
1085, Canal St. Station, New York NY 10013-1085) Recorded live in¨
Detroit in January 88, I have never actually listened to Lydia¨
Lunch speak. Wish I had earlier! Now I can understand why¨
dickhead males get all upset -- she's not very nice to standard¨
issue breeding males, and they're not used to the criticism. Get¨
used to it DUDE.

Two sides of a monolog on sex and life. Informs through shock¨
value, and a lot of it is just plain funny. And a few jerks¨
(guess what sex) say typical rude shit at various points; she¨
simply works 'em in. Lots of it is very personal with no apology,¨
and lots of it is simply well informed sharp¨
observation.\hfill{\bf TJ}

\bar

{\entry Surrogate Brains} Surrogate Serenades EP (LOOKOUT!
Rec\-ords, Box 1000, Laytonville CA 95454) Six songs on the¨
latest record from these guys (they appear on three previous¨
LOOKOUT! compilations). Tight and clean punk/rock. The whole¨
record is good, but a couple of songs stand out; ``Tide On My¨
Soiled Genes'' (cute title) about racism without the usual punk¨
rock pontificating, and my favorite, ``America the Machine'',¨
rather depressing words but the music is hot. Kendon Smith did a¨
little more than half the vocals and lyrics.

I've seen these guys play at Gilman Street; they put on a great¨
show! If we ever do another Homocore show they are gonna get a¨
phone call\dots

You can write 'em at: Surrogate Brains Friendship Line, Box¨
70104, Stockton CA 95207.

(I wish somebody who has all the LOOKOUT! records would write up¨
reviews of 'em, and I'll include in the next issue. There are a¨
lot of them!)\hfill{\bf TJ}
