The Little Garden - Full-time Internet Service
                     Q U E S T I O N N A I R E

This questionnaire is for full-time, leased-line, modem-based, or
Frame Relay service. If you want PART-TIME, "dial up" modem-based
service, service, send mail to dialup@tlg.org.

IF YOU OBTAINED THIS QUESTIONNAIRE OVER A WEEK AGO, GET A NEW ONE!
The TLG documents are updated frequently to add new services, etc.

STOP! Have you read the TLG Frequently Asked Questions documents?
They are required reading; you can obtain them via FTP from
ftp.tlg.org as:
ftp://ftp.tlg.org/pub/FAQs/tlg-modem.faq	modem-based connections
ftp://ftp.tlg.org/pub/FAQs/tlg-leased-line.faq	leased-line-based connections
ftp://ftp.tlg.org/pub/FAQs/tlg-frame.faq	leased-line-based connections

The information in this questionnaire is needed to start your order.
If you can't answer it all, fill out what you can and mail it to
admin@tlg.org with your very specific questions, and someone will
contact you.

ALWAYS SAVE A COPY! TLG WILL *NOT* SAVE WHAT YOU SEND US! We might
have to pass this back and forth a few times to get it all filled
in. It is up to YOU to save a copy of this file! (For brevity, you
can delete all this junk above the long dashed line below.)

TLG maintains low overhead and the sanity of its volunteers and
miniscule paid staff by having each member do some of the work.
Let's start here!

Please "check boxes" by replace the space with an X -- and nothing
else. This way our lazy staff can use nice scripts to process
these questionnaires -- and keep overhead and costs low.

#!! EXPERTISE/EXPERIENCE
Specifically with installing TCP/IP and related software. This
helps us pick a volunteer to help you get online. While we don't
expect you to have done this before, you must be able to take care
of the bulk of the work yourself.

ANSWERS -- enter one digit into the boxes below.
0 Why, I wrote the RFC, back in the olden days.
1 I do it more than occasionally; confident.
2 Some TCP/IP experience, will likely take care of it myself.
3 Limited experience, might need assistance with specifics.
4 Have thoroughly read about it, probably need assistance.
5 No TCP/IP knowledge, some computer experience.
         6 Cannot do it myself.

#exp1 [ ] IP networking basics (IP addresses vs. domain names, etc).
#exp2 [ ] Establishing the modem link.
#exp3 [ ] Installing/configuring/debugging SLIP/PPP.
#exp4 [ ] Can make routing work.
#exp5 [ ] Can configure/debug DNS.

----------------
#!! HOST SOFTWARE
System software YOU will be using on your end. We don't really care
what you use -- but some systems provide enough tools that we won't
worry about it -- and some are very limited. If you have a mixed
system (unix, DOS, Mac, etc) just let us know what your capabilities
are.

Unix variants:

#host [ ] BSD386
#host [ ] Linux
#host [ ] FreeBSD
#host [ ] BSDI
#host [ ] SunOS/Solaris
#host [ ] NetBSD
#host [ ] Other UNIX variant

DOS/Macintosh/Windows:

#host [ ] Windows with Trumpet Winsock (note1)
#host [ ] Chameleon (note1)
#host [ ] Macintosh TCP/IP 2.04(or greater)
#host [ ] NOS.EXE (KA9Q) (note1)

Note1: Mac TCP/IP and Windows/Winsock is still somewhat limited in
server software to provide basic Internet services. Generally, FTP,
Gopher and Web servers and clients are available; Telnet servers
so far are not. Your needs will be better met with TLG's part-time,
dial-up SLIP or PPP. If you are certain you can arrange necessary
services, and want to connect full-time, check this box to indicate
that you understand Mac/Windows software may have limited services:

#limit1 [ ] I understand Macintosh/Windows may have limited services.

----------------
#!! (domain) NAMES AND (ip) ADDRESSES
If you already have a connection to the internet, other than a
"shell account", let us know here.

Regarding IP addresses: We STRONGLY prefer to assign you a full
8-bit subnet from us, rather than have you obtain one from the NIC.
If you believe you have a need for a separate NIC-assigned address,
you must discuss this with us in advance.

#cur1 [ ] I already have a domain name in use.
#cur2 [ ] I already have a NIC-assigned subnet in use.
#cur3 [ ] I now/recently have/had direct Internet service.

We suggest that you let TLG do your DNS primary, if possible.
We will register your domain and maintain both the primary and secondary
DNS servers. We have an outside-TLG site which will do
secondary domain name service for us.

#dns1 [ ] I want TLG to deal with all of my domain name service needs.
#dns2 [ ] I'll deal with name service on my own.

If you don't want TLG to do your DNS, you should have at least one
NOT-CONNECTED-TO-THE-SAME-NETWORK secondary DNS server.

----------------
#!! NSFNET ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY
NSFnet Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) applies to all traffic to and
through NSF-funded networks, not necessarily all of the Internet
(and certainly not TLG portions of the network.)

You can get a copy of the NSFnet AUP, as well as AUP's of other
large internetworks, from ftp://nis.nsf.net/nsfnet/acceptable.use.policies/

#nsf1 [ ] I understand the NSFnet Acceptable Use Policy.
#nsf2 [ ] I understand which of my traffic NSFnet AUP applies to.
#nsf3 [ ] I agree to follow NSFnet AUP for my traffic crossing NSFnet.

----------------
#!! SERVICE TYPE
Please tell us what type of connectivity you want to use. If you
are unsure of the differences between Frame Relay and leased-line
service, check both or ask us. If you want other than modem-based
service (leased line, Frame Relay, etc) skip ahead to the NAMES
AND (ip) ADDRESSES section that follows the modem section:

DO NOT ORDER LINES UNTIL YOU HAVE CONTACTED TLG!!!

#srvc [ ] I want 'Leased-line Virtual T1' service
#srvc [ ] I want 'Leased-line 56K' service
#srvc [ ] I want 'Frame-Relay' service
#srvc [ ] I want 'Modem-based 14.4k' service
#srvc [ ] I want 'Modem-based 28.8k' service
#srvc [ ] I want 'Maximum T1' service

DO NOT ORDER LEASED-LINES UNTIL YOU HAVE CONTACTED TLG!!!

--------------- OTHER USERS SKIP PAST THESE QUESTIONS -------------

----------------
#!! LINE PROTOCOL -- modem-based only
What protocol will you use? SLIP or PPP? There is very little, if any,
benefit of one over the other. If you have one and not the other, use
what you've got. You really want to have compression, using compression
helps performance quite a bit. We've never seen a version of PPP that
doesn't support compression, but you should double check you software
to ensure that it is supported to be safe.

#proto [ ] I will use Van Jacobson compressed SLIP
		(sometimes called CSLIP).
#proto [ ] I will use uncompressed SLIP.
#proto [ ] I will use PPP.
#proto [ ] I have not located driver software yet.
----------------
#!! MODEM -- modem-based only
You need to have one modem to dedicate to this connection. There
are many fine modems, and a few clunkers to avoid. There are so
many choices of modems that we don't pretend to be up on them all.

#mod1 [ ] I read and understand the modem related issues in the
                TLG FAQ sheet.

----------------
#!! PHONE LINES
You, the customer, are responsible for the cost of a 24 hour a day
phone call to the closest TLG site. It's best if you have flat-rate
residential service, and the TLG access number is within your local
calling area; in this case you pay only your monthly flat rate.

For business-rate (measured rate) users, you will be charged $0.01
for each minute you are connected, which works out to $432 per
month, which makes this not practical for most users.

NOTE: You must check at least one of these boxes before we will
process this questionnaire. It is up to you to determine the best
way to connect to us.

#pop [ ] I can dial San Francisco 415-552-XXXX as a flat-rate call.
#pop [ ] I can dial San Francisco 415-395-XXXX as a flat-rate call.
#pop [ ] I can dial Mtn. View 415-903-XXXX as a flat-rate call.
