ANNOUNCING THE FORMATION OF A TEMP WORKERS'UNION in the San Francisco Bay Area NEEDED: Temp Workers committed to organizing a Temp Workers Union of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), and a worker-run, non-profit temp agency. The IWW has never been run by the corrupt or power hungry. It doesn't have any paid union officials getting rich off your dues. The Temp Workers' Union (TWU) will be run democratically, not by a president or any other boss. Each skill group within the TWU will set its own rates of compensation, will test each other's skill level, will rate the employers and decide which they will and won't work for, and will teach and learn from each other anything the group deems necessary. The skill groups will subdivide into caucuses of 5-20 workers, who will align on geographical, time or social lines, or any others the temps themselves desire. Each skill group will elect one of its members to staff the main office, at a pay rate equivalent to that which others of the same skill group make. The TWU shall run its temp agency under the control of the workers themselves, as a non-profit/not-for-profit organization. This will call for the kind of continuity that a "permanent" staff is called for-- but staff can be held accessible and accountable by subjecting such staffing positions to a majority vote, and mechanisms for recall. The TWU is not merely a mechanism to help you struggle for higher wages-- the higher wages are built into its structure. A living wage is yours by right. This union exists to teach some, and reaffirm to others, the fact that we run this world, this country, our jobsites and our very own lives! In practicing this while securing ourselves livelihoods, we can plainly demonstrate this deeper truth to ourselves and others, too. In the first stage of this project, the TWU will serve both the workers who want to be temp workers and those who are forced by the lack of full-time jobs to work temporarily. Therefore, we will charge no changeover fee to anyone who offers a more permanent job to any of our members who accept it. It is our hope that your experience with the TWU will offer you the kind of confidence in yourself and those you work with that will carry over into the next workplace, and indeed, wherever else you may work. If you can run your own union, and run your own non-profit/not-for-profit temp agency, you can do anything you want! And together, we can do things that we cannot do alone. We have the ball rolling-- won't you lend a hand?
