cabinet if you bring it down with FW helms. i got a lead on a 120 meg hard
drive for $60-$80 if a certain deal goes through, too!

hi matt!

200 words just isn't much to work with, but here is something...
it's inspired me to do a longer piece.

The San Francisco Bay Area Coalition for Our Reproductive Rights
(BACORR) responded to Operation Rescue-California's "Summer of
Missions '94" caravan through central California and the S.F. Bay
Area by putting a crew of follow cars on the road, which provided
detailed reporting on the activity of the caravan to clinic
defense teams throughout the region.

Local support for OR was consistently weak at the clinics. OR made
four attempts to harrass physicians at their homes. The targeted
physician in San Jose had moved, the one in Sacramento was out of
the country, and the two in Contra Costa county had neighbors turn
out in their support. One of them vowed to work with BACORR's
Strong Link Coalition and get involved with Medical Students for
Choice.

The police were supportive of OR in several instances. In Monterey
County police, after not impeding an OR invasion of a medical
building courtyard, escorted OR out of town, while CHP officers
picked out and followed BACORR vehicles interspersed in the
caravan. In Ft. Bragg the police, including the police chief,
refused to assist an 18-year old with complications to her
pregnancy at the request of clinic staff when OR members blocked
her entrance into Women's Health Clinic.

Hey Dekey-deke!
Hello hello! Just a short note - I just heard from George that
he hasn't received a registration form for the Assembly - is this only
because he just recently re-initiated? I'll send him one ASAP but it
would be good to know if this is widespread occurance...As if you don't
have enough to do, right!
Oh wow I almost forgot the great news! The demurrer was heard
today and we won!!! In both Salazar's court and Barton's the prior
unabridged version of the sitting law was found to be unconstitutional!!!
We still have to go back for our 148 resisting arrest charges but most
likely they will end up dropping the charges since the arrests were
unconstitutional to begin with. I never expected us to really get a court
victory. The local news really glorified us too; suddenly we are the
committed heros who stuck it out amidst *discrimination* (yes they'll
actually say it now...) from all sides. Check the papers for any mention
of it.
I'm sending you a big packet of stuff including some
complimentary personalized stationary from Pacific Press and a bunch of
the finished snazzy IWW statement pamphlets.
There's more to tell but I'm kind of beat for tongiht. Talk to ya soon!
love and insurrection,
maile

Oh, BTW... just ran into Dave MDC in the course of running TLG errands
(Anders too, for that matter, & we swapped #s.) ANYway, that reminded me
that MDC's playing the vet's hall this weekend, and I mentioned it to
Dave, and he said that they're *way* hot for an IWW/FNB-type table and
outreach thing to happen there. He'll put some permutation of IWW/FNB on
the guest list...

And If He Forgets, well, FW Helms is supposed to show up in S.F. sometime
this week, and we're supposed to hook up and head down there. I can
probably (love that hedge, not that it's necessary) facilitate the
resolution of any possible communication breakdown with, say, the folks
working the door. In other words, Count On Doing It. If ya want to, I
mean!  *:-}

Also, I'm gonna get going on outreach to current/recent/former wobs on
the assembly. Which makes me wonder (as I sketch an outline of said
outreach in my hot li'l head): did y'all ever decide just how public you
want to make knowledge of the concomitant action? Some sorta resolution
to that question, either way, would be nice, even if it don't happen
before this weekend...

I'm still gonna reply specifically to various letters sittin' in my mail
queue, but meanwhile Reality virtually Marches On...

So, hold that fort, honey! Cuz we're gettin' down there... stay FABulous
meanwhile!

In Solidarity True,
--Deke

Special P.S.: Oh fuque! I just realized that the first S.F. GMB GOC
meeting is Sunday at, like... lessee, 1:30 p.m. That oughta make
logistics nice 'n' scary.... (Wonder what would happen if, after all that
agitation, I didn't even show at the first GOC mtg., but instead made a
report-back from SC at the branch meeting the following weekend? Um...
fuk. Gotta Go. Wanna chat. Take care y'all...)

hi deke;

we're planning on tabling MDC friday.

as for a resolution to the problem of "how public" we want to be,
well we'll resolve that at our branch meeting this saturday (can
you come?) i think we really need to get people down here willing
to sleep out & risk arrest; i'm getting real worried that we're
not going to have much solidarity except for the usual die-hards
down here...we've got an action meeting friday (i assume you know
this) where we will discuss this problem.

when will you be arriving down here? of course you're welcome to
stay at the compound...

i've got a meeting at the louden nelson regarding the sound
system, so i gotta go.

stay FABulous!
vad.

Well, I'm workin' it from this end. The materials Maile sent me have
*already* been instrumental towards this end; I *really* hope to pick up
many more brochures when I'm down there. BTW, it looks like FW Helms will
be getting in on Saturday, so I guess I'll hook up with him later.

I was just at the FNB meeting, where I left flyers for the 22nd and
announced the action. BACORR's been informed too, and wants to do some
sorta outreach around the whole ball of assembled wax. (This might,
however, take the form of sending stuff along with me). I plan to do a
mailing to my Special List early next week, and if I can make it back in
time, bring it up at the GOC meeting Sunday. (Anyone down there wanna
drive up here Sunday morning, maybe make that scene? Please keep an ear
to the ground...) Something else to entice the driver: me and FW Mark
Nevin, with whom I spent some quality time last night brainstorming on
Assembly support coordination, are gonna go over to the e. bay Infoshop
Sun. after the GOC meeting, and do the dinner there. Hopefully, we can
hook up with FW Helms and be a relatively FABulous contingent.

So no, I'm not lazing off here! *:)

I'm leaving work early tomorrow, trying to make the 4 p.m. train (which
connects with the shuttle bus directly, if memory serves me well). That
means-- what, 7:30 p.m.? I think so. I'll go directly to Campbell St.
with the new guts of Alexander (body actually); this will be so whenever
I get in.

Well, I gotta go table a *queer* club for BACORR. If either of us has
spaced anything, I'll be here at work til, say (to be safe) three. Drop
me a line...

Hi FW's,

Well, the GOC meeting was a bust, though not utterly useless. Methinks
I'll save my efforts for outreach on the upcoming kittyfest...

I went to Long Haul/Infoshop last night w/ FW Mark. They do dinner on
Sunday night, and I really must make it over there. Lots of (low-key)
Fellow Workers in the mix... Um, there were already SCGMB pamphlets on
the criminalization of poverty there; no one quite knew who had dropped
'em off. I left flyers for video night and copies of that sentinel
article on the sitting ban ruling. Lots of folx, meanwhile, are quite
interested in the GA. They've been hearing aboput it, and are hungry for
more info. FW Craig Metz (of the UCBerkeley Recyclers Job Shop, who have
been reconsidering their affiliation with the union/Robt. Rush, BTW) has
an office there, and would be a good person to send things to. Address as
follows:
FW Craig Metz c/o Long Haul/Infoshop
3124 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley CA 94705

In many ways, SCGMB's debutante ball couldn't have happened at a more,
um, fortunate time; this branch, for one, is otherwise dead in the water.

Also, I met FW Stephen Dunifer last night. He's interested in doing some
sorta broadcast from the GA-- show or otherwise. Also, he's a proud
member of the Joe Hill Memorial Society. He's getting a copy of a Gurley
Flynn tape from Wayne State archives, which he will gladly share with us
(as well as, probably, broadcast from). He's got a bunch of printed stuff
from wob history, which he has plans to scan into a computer and publish
on CD ROM. We spent quite a while connecting... His e-mail address is:
frbspd@crl.com

BTW, I'm sending along much useful info to FW Phillips, along the lines
of what FW Israel said he was asking about. I also have a reference to
someone at Natl. Lawyers Guild...

What else? Oh yeah-- East Bay FNB!!! We almost forgot. FW Craig has some
contax; let's go ahead and send em stuff too. I hope to get over there
more, but there's only two Sundays between now and GA, so don't just wait
for me!Let's all solicit their participation.

I'm gonna try to put together a mailing today; send me a show &/or action
flyewr template ASAP, and I'll copy it off at GHQ. Me and Mark are gonna
get the bay area phone list and work it, sometime this week.

That's about it in a nutshell or two. Gotta get to work. Do give me
feedback/updates, and likewise; I'll keep you up on what I'm up to as it
happens.

Oh, and Hold that Fort!

... in the hot, deep dish.

I just talked to GST Rush, to get FW Phillips' mailing address with which
to send that stuff along. (Oh shit-- I spaced on sending him a SCGMB
pamphlet! ANYway...)

According to Rush, folks in the midwest are "circulating a rumor" that
Santa Cruz will be fielding a candidate for GST. I said not to the best
of my knowledge, and if it were so I'd probably know! Maybe someone will
surprise us, but I don't even think anyone there is eligible (Rush
thought I was-- I pointed out that even if I wanted to, which I DON'T,
I'm one month short of 3 years in Sept., Technically speaking).

I suggested that they must think we have a Hidden Agenda, because they
equate a race for General Assembly with a factional Power Play. He
agreed, and we both bemoaned that kinda attitude as not what it's about.
I mean, we may have fresh ideas for referendum, but in terms of "what
we're doing" with GA, all our cards are on the table. Their paranoia
problems are, in short, their own. (BTW, I think any "repurcussions" of
this kinda rumor-mongering is only gonna make us look better, as if we
needed the help with image!)

ANYhow, I told Rush I'd happily leave the Holding of the Fort to him (as
opposed to going for it myself). He said he's not running again. As for
who is, the scoop is that Fred Chase (Ann Arbor) plans to run for GST.
Wonder why "the midwest" is worried about a S.C. candidate...

So that's the scoop. Vision, or Factions? Solidarity? While supplies last...

Stay FABulous, as I remain

...the old-fashioned way. First, the funny story du jour and then I'll
get to work...

So I leave a note for GST Rush, cuz I made about 350 copies on the
orifice machine, and he's requested the courtesy by way of a note posted
on said machine, which he loves dearly. ANYway, a lot of it was stuff for
the mailing, but also the Chiapas news, EF! Headwaters flyers, some GA
registration forms... (didn't send those along too, as what there was was
*exactly* one ounce!)

So I leave this note, in which I'm also trying to prepare our fearful
leader for the fact that my letter is awfully, well, open to those whose
dues status is, shall we say, UNCLEAN. It's the truth (documentation
follows) that all I mailed to are or have (relatively) recently been of
the OBU tribe. So I'm telling him what's up, that I sent him a copy via
the post too (for the situational affirmations, like the letters coming
back *out* of the postal system, you know?), and I'm trying to get with
him to talk about logistics around GA and all these things. BTW, he says
that won't happen til next week. Fortunately, that still leaves a week;
he has a GOB to get out and a day to take off... ANYway.

So he calls me up at work, upon finding my note(s) on his desk, and he
asks me "How do you know how to contact so many former wobblies," in a
manner kinda concerned and not very chatty. I realize he thinks I just
mailed <insert whatever he thinks I mailed out here> to 350 malingering
non-dues-payers!!! Imagine his consternation. I giggled and explained it
was only about 40 or 45 people, and there's as many current wobs in the
mix as former ones, FWs moved up here from SC, etc. etc.

I mean, does Robert Rush like to worry, or is he simply worry's
plaything? Or what?

Speaking of worry... just when Robert Rush seemed to be communing with
rainy days and Mondays... okay, so he's not standing, er running for
re-election. We know (from Rush) that Fred Chase (check out *his* GEB
record) is running. Well, I was looking around for a GA registration form
in the office so I could copy it, and having a *terrible* time (I had to
open a piece of returned mail for one, but don't worry, I left
documentation of what was up)... imagine that! GHQ has no spare
registration forms on hand, like anyone might just want one. Well, I
don't snoop but I'm a well-known curious kitty, and the Assembly file
seemed a good place to look for the form anyway. That's how I found out
that Jon Bekken already has seven nominations for GST. And someone with
the proclivities for such things, as Robert Rush, doesn't even know who's
eligible in his local area... *sigh* It's not the office-movoing thing I
worry so much about (is it rubbing off?), but rather, the hands that
things like dues records could fall into. You know, the most anally
observed bureaucratic rituals can be reduced to shambles by sheer
incompetence, and then proclaimed by the mouth connected to those hands
to never have been. That's about what happened *last* time Bekken was
GST... I'm afraid a rubber stamp is poor innoculation to *that* blues.

Well. I must be in story mode today. Pardon my rambling, you know how I
get. I stayed up late and woke up early to get that mailing out ASAP, and
several coffees later, my head's just a little funny, my mouth (well,
fingers) a little loose. I miss chillin' and shootion the shit with ya,
but on the other hand I guess it's part of why I'm a half-decent typist
by now...

SO-- here's the work. Who received the letters+ I sent, broken down by
regions... BTW, hasta! Stay fab...

Hi Deke.
I have no clue who that is. There are so many different things going on
in NY, that you can't really know everything that's going on though.
Still, the guy seems ultra-wingnutty. Anyways, it couldn't hurt to
give the NY-GMB's address and phone number information from the IW, that's
public after all.

I'm flying into SF on Aug. 23 and leaving Sep. 7. Looking forward to
seeing you after so long.

Solidarity,
Matt

Yeah, that's what I figured too.

Likewise! You should have my contact info by then (c/o L&R POB); call me
if yer in the city or I'll see ya in th'cruz. I passed this info along to
the scgmb online folx too...

BTW, ever play with newsfeeds on-line? We just got 'em routed in through
where I work. They don't seem to get used by folx like us like we could.
Something to think about, as online newsfeeds flow quickly and globally.

Anyhow, I'll see ya soon and we can catch up then. Meanwhile, I remain

I just spoke with Riva Enteen of the NLG (415-255-1055, FYI) about the
assembly. I filled her in on what we have in mind, and that we needed
attorney and observer contax. I also told her that though we're not rich,
we have money budgeted for such, and that S.C. activists have gotten their
feet wet in legal and courtroom self-education. All these things sounded
good to her.

She's gonna get in touch with someone down there named John Marshall,
who's worked in the contexts we're looking for among the
progressive-legal community in S.C. on behalf of the UCSC students who
got arrested at Soledad on May 11th (date sound familiar?). Oh-- that's
when I mentioned FNB to her. Anyway, he's got a good sense for both
lawyers and observers in S.C., and issues related thereunto.

She's gonna call me back early next week. The vibe was really good, and
the pieces continue to fall into place...

Ahoy from the great northwest,
Thank you so much for packet of info, makes me glad I left that goddess
forsaken hole, Santa Cruz. Although I wish we were going to be there for
the assembly. Emma & I are going to Southern California from the 1-6.
Congratulate Emma, she sat on her first picket line today. There is a
grocery workers strike on here. So Emma and I went into the store, greeted
all the scabs, filled up a cart with Ice cream, lots of loose vegetables,a
frozen turkey, hungry man dinners etc. and then left it in the aisle. So
fun. Unfortunately none of the strikers I talked to knew what a wobbly
was. While I was telling them all about the wobs I felt like a real
hypocrite, because I've been in bad standing since January. Well when we
get it together to pay up Mark will be paying Minimum dues again, 'cuz he
fired Kinko's. Thank God,he got caught getting film developed and not paying.
So he's unemployed save for the occasional temp job. But the real
beautiful part of our situation is that we no longer pay rent! Yes I've
become the asst. manager of this building. I hate that the word manager
is in my title, but it's not what it sounds. There's the manager who does
all work of maintaining and renting out the building, she's my boss, and
all I do is clean the halls, lobby and laundry rooms, and for this I get
a free apt. In fact we moved into the building nextdoor, into a bigger
apt. Our number is still bathwax, our new address is 409 SW 12 Ave #307
Portland 97205. Please think of us duing the assembly 'cuz we're there in
spirit. What is your new job all about? We love you like crazy and
Emma says she's yours for the revolution.

...huh? Oh, wow! is about how it sounded in my head when I got yer
communique, Jen!!! Between lotsa work forth'assembly and my
inconvenienced sleep pattern, I've been a little mushy at work lately.
Thanx for the jolt!

Lessee, just a coupla things right off the bat. To subscribe to the iww
on-line news conference-type-thing (really just a big mailing list),
write to Carlos Murray and ask to be put on it. He's at:
indwrk@web.apc.org
The mailing list address (to post):
iww.news@conf.igc.apc.org
I added ya to my own list, too... *:-)

Glad to hear y'all are doing so well. I like it here in th'shitty OK,
but there are moments I wish I'd taken the northerly plunge. Next
spring/summer, though... I might be able to swing a job up there, through
the network I work for now. Actually, I work for the southern half, The
Little Garden. We provide raw Internet connectivity up to pretty large
"bandwidth". Up in Portland it's RainNet. We may end up with something in
Seattle by next year too. I work for my old (and anarchist!) friend Tom
Jennings. It's going really well, I'm learning stuff, get to dolots of
on-the-clock work for the revolution, make more money than I'm used to
amking (for example, I eat *every time* I get hungry! Imagine the
decadence...)

Do you ever do the, er, television thing? Well, I've got a roomie who
does, and does so with a VCR, and sometimes I let him get me to watch some
thing. Well, he showed me a bunch of something called TV Nation last
night, which is an NBC show (how I don't know, but it don't look to last).
It's done by Michael Moore, the guy who did Roger and Me. There was a
segment on the last, um is it an episode if it's a magazine-type show?
anyway-- in which they decided that, like the Who (and, pointedly, the
Stones), Communism needed a farewell tour of America. So they painted
this semi truck a *vivid* red with a hammer-and-sickle w/star in yellow
(USSR style) on all four sides, loaded it up with Glorious Relics and
Precious Thoughts, and hired a Teamster to drive it from NYC to New
Orleans and back. No, really! Then they showed the footage on prime-time
TV. They weren't very picky about what flavors of commie they mixed--
russkie mixed with Mao, the Revolutionary Worker, even a live appearance
at the start of the tour by Chairman Gus Hall. It was really a scream!
But the best part was them driving it through the deep south, I mean,
right through Selma Alabama. No, really! And they had all this glorious
Russian singing in the background... it was very special, and it reminded
me of y'all...

So I'm glad you wrote so soona fterwards, so I could promptly share that
with ya!

I gotta get back to work, such as it is. Stay FABulous, and in touch, as
I shall likewise.

Long Live the Fifth Internatural!!!
