FW Lenny,
Glad to hear that you are interested in the publishing idea. We don't really
deal in legal contracts, but we will gladly sign one if you have one. Normally, we just
write up an understanding between the various parties as to terms, conditions, etc., an
d are bound by our commitment as revolutionaries to abide by it. However, we will
gladly do it in whatever fashion you like (By the way, this means that we don't have a
standard contract ready, so you might have to come up with one).
Just as a starting point, let me give you a sketch as to what we may be able to
do. If the costs of producing the pamphlet is about 50 to 70 cents per pamphlet
(printing, postage, wastage, order and collecting overhead), we would probably set a
cover pr ice of $3. This would mean that the majority of the copies would be sold at
about $1.50 (we have to give a bulk discount). If we sell our run at a decent clip, we
would be able to give 30 cents per pamphlet as a royalty and still remain viable (this
wou ld set the break even point at 2/3 of the run which is a bit high, but workable).
We would further be glad to provide LV with as many pamphlets as you like at cost (50 to
70 cents). If you would like to continue printing the pamphlets on a small scale, we
can live with that, but we would prefer to have one version in circulation, so as to
minimize confusion, and not appear to be competing with each other. Also, you would get
20 pamphlets for your own use (for family and f!
 riends).
While setting a higher cover price would generally increase the return per
pamphlet, it is our experience that it is better to sell a larger number of pamphlets
than to end up getting stuck with low sales because the price discourages sales.
Ideally, we
should sell out in six to nine months.
I think that an initial run of 1000 copies would give us a good sense of how it
would sell. If we sell out very quickly, and envision a second run of 2000 or more
copies we could definitely bump up your royalty, since there would be less risk on our
par t. What I would like to do is send out a letter to all the IWW groups, getting them
to pre-order the pamphlets at the 50% discount and see how many orders we get pledged
(if we can get each group to put out $20-$40, we could sell half the run starting of f).
However, before I start building grand plans, I would like to know what you
think about these ideas. Also, if you can send me the texts of the two Workers Guides
by email [ASCII is fine] we would appreciate it. In Solidarity Josie, x341890 PS I was
thinking of doing a 2 color cover on glossy stock (like Lorenzo's) which is a bit
extravagant for a pamphlet, but would make it stand out, and seem to make a $3 cover a
deal. What do you think?
