Dear FW Kevin,
Quick update on Lorenzo. He was supposed to get in touch, but I think that his schedule,
combined with not having your phone number held him up. His phone number in Atlanta is (404) 687-
8324. He will be arriving on Oct 20th and leaving on November 2nd. He has a few talks already planned
including workshops at the Anarchy in the UK event, plus some at the London School of Economics.
Please call him, either in the early morning or the later evening, Atlanta time (5 or 6 hours earlier than UK
time.) He might need to be picked up at the airport, etc.
In Solidarity
Josie

Dear Mike,
Glad to hear that you are willing to do the GST thing. As to a joint GA in Philly/LV, that sounds
good to me. There are definitely people here who would be willing to do the office work thing, and we do
have space, etc. to deal with it. We could probably work out rent for something like $100-$150 / month.
There are also very reliable office worker types who would gladly participate (BTW, we actually might
have a free storefront thanks to a prisoner donation through Paterson). As to joint efforts, we would
probably like to somehow include Paterson in any regional deal, though decentralization can be taken too
far. As an aside, we have talked around here about putting in a bid for the Litt project on a strict % basis.
That is we would sell the books, and a guaranteed % would go to the IWW (this would be a better deal than
the current dubious rent+labor scheme). Anyway, we would be integrating it all with Monkeywrench's
distribution.
As to the house, we may be working something out, though its too early to tell. If it all happens
correctly, we should have our house off the sheriff sale by Friday, but we don't want to count our sheriff's
until they've hatched.
Also, I am personally going to be wandering alot over the next few months. Aside from trying to
get things working in Baltimore, NYC, and Lancaster, I will be going out to the West Coast again for some
stints in LA, SF and probably Santa Cruz (who knows, maybe even Portland). Additionally, Miale from SC
may be spending the month of November out here to tour around (Also, Deke will be visiting for the
weekend of Nov 2nd, if any LV types want to plan something). So there is a lot of networking going on.
Lastly, keep an eye out for new assessment stamps, we just got back 4 from the printer
(Duplication Workers, Staley Workers, Black/People of Color, and Decentralized Archive) at $5 a pop. All
are 2 color on gummed paper, so they're pretty nice. SC also is doing some on sticker paper. Hopefully,
this will start to mobilize more financial involvement among members.
	In Solidarity,
	Josie

Dear Mike,
As always, we would love to have you run, and we are willing to do the office thing if that would
help you run, but please don't feel compelled to do anything injurious to your personal situation for it. As
Robert Rush reminded me at the Assembly, it only takes 51% of the IWW to change the constitution, so no
matter who is GST, or on the GEB, there is only so much an active, organizing, and growing membership
can be stopped from doing. Still, it would be great to have you as GST and to have the office on the East
Coast for a while.
According to Tai, the GST can have the office anywhere and anyway that they want to, so there is
no intrinsic reason why, with a little difficulty, you couldn't manage the office on an absentee basis for a
while. Between email, fax and phone, we can set up ways in which you would get all documents
electronically wherever you have a computer to receive them (We have a scanner here, and we routinely
OCR documents, in addition, handwritten documents could be reproduced in graphic form. The main effort
would be to synchronize software to insure minimal problems) As such, visiting once every week or two,
you would be able to manage the office pretty effectively (Since rent would be much lower here, part of the
difference could help defray the costs of commuting) Also, this might become the basis of a more global
administration of the IWW. If almost everything is maintained also in electronic form, it can be made
available to the entire membership by email (At least every GMB and IU could access them, creating a
more Universal, and immediate GOB) This could also build into the goal of every GMB and IU having
computer/fax/phone infrastructure. In any event, this situation would primarily only be necessary for the
first few months of the year. Since I would be out on the West Coast for Feb.-May, I would also be
interested in reinforcing this model of telecommuting. Lastly, since many of the Office's responsibilities are
pretty routine, a reliable staff is what would be performing most of these day to day activities. Let me know
what you think about this (this whole scheme could be far expanded and refined if there is an interest in
doing so) [at any event, one of my jobs has been software consulting which includes designing,
programming, and training people on software. Fundamentally, all this technology only increases the
possibilities, it does not make a poor administrator good, or a good one bad]
Hope that this is at least some more food for thought. We are working on creating something akin to a Joe
Hill house in Philadelphia (officially a Ben Fletcher House) to provide a more routine and reliable home for
Wobs passing through. Possibilities range from renting the 2nd floor of the Aspace (app $310/month) as a
union hall, or expanding our share of the Monkeywrench warehouse (up to $250/month depending on what)
to create a bunk style guest room capable of accommodating 4 guests. As we already want to install 2
showers and a washer/dryer in the warehouse as a squatter/homeless support service, this would only take a
little more work and time. We currently offer housing to any passing Wobs, but this is on a personal basis,
so we can't always depend on it. Anyway, this could help build a more active relationship to the GA for
more of the membership (after all, you would not have to worry about housing if you visit the office)
I'm sure this is much more than you were bargaining for as a response, and we would gladly work with any
other ideas you develop that might make things work.
9 days and counting
Josie

Fellow Workers,

We have just been informed that FW and delegate Lorenzo
Kom'boa Ervin has had his passport stopped by the US State
Department. FW Ervin was schedualed to attend the "Anarchy in the
UK" conference as a speaker on Political Prisoners, Labor, and
Racism, as well as additional talks at the London School of
Economics, and meetings of the UK IWW. He is schedualed to leave
the US on Wednesday the 19th, and this Monday morning interference
severly restricts his ability to travel.

We currently do not know under what basis his passport is
being held, but we do know that FW Ervin applied more than 3 weeks
ago and that the Miami passport office issued his passport last
Thursday. It was, however, stopped by the State Department before
it was mailed to him. Clearly, this kind of interference by the
US government into our fundamental rights to travel and speak
freely cannot be tollerated.

At this time we have not yet determined our form of
response, but we may be asking for a fax/phone campaign on the
State Dept. We will keep you posted with Email notes, and we will
have all new information on our answering machine at the Phila GMB
(215) 747-0855.

Fellow Workers,

Good news on the Lorenzo front (at least we think so).
The State Dept is sending Lorenzo's passport and he should receive
it on Tues Morning. The reason given for stopping his passport
was that he owed the State Department the money for his
"repatriation" in 1969 (that is, when he was abducted, brought
back, and thrown into prison for 15 years). Aparently, the State
Dept did not feel they could seriously pursue such an argument 30
years later.

We hope that Lorenzo will recieve his passport and be on
his way, and that a mobilization will not be necessary, but stay
in touch.

Thanks for the update. Lorenzo phoned me yesterday about his problems. I
spoke to a couple of comrades and to say the least we were completely pissed
off.

We can now go ahead with our plans. If Lorenzo does have trouble however we
have got some ideas for an action at the US embassy here in London at some time
during the ten day festival.

So far Lorenzo's schedule looks like this

Thursday 20 to Friday 21 A bit of rest and relaxation to get ovewr the flight
and a short trip to Oxford to meet members of our Oxford branch.

Saturday 22 UK IWW meeting, anarchist bookfair. We have a public meeting in
the evening at which Lorenzo will be speaking along with myself.

Monday 24 Internatioanl anti Fascist Rally

Thursday 27 and Friday 28 Two meetings during the festival. The Friday is an
international anarchist day, but I can't remember what is happening on the
thursday.

Tuesday 1 November Meeting in Oxford. Oxford has a vibrant anarchist
community but it is all white. The comrades have set up a meeting with the
black community for Lorenzo to talk on anarchism and revolutioanry unionism.

Wednesday 2 November Return to US.

It seems as if some of the organisation around the festival has been a bit
haphazard. For example when I spoke to Lorenzo on sunday no one from the
festival had told him when and where he was speaking etc. Never mind,
everything seems to be turning out ok.

Hope to see you all next year at the Assembly. I certainly support the call
for it to be held on the west coast. It makes it a bit easier for us "euros"
to travel.

Let me know if anything else happens. I will not be on this e-mail address
tomorrow. At a meeting in London in the day and speaking in the evening at an
IWW organising meeting for couriers. This is our first real attempt to
organise...

My phone no for any developments is 0793 610707.

Best wishes and solidarity to all in Philly.

Hopefully you'll get to meet and interact with a good bunch of us
I'm sure you're well connected with Josie and Bob, but if I can be of any

Hey Kat, Deke here. Sorry I'm a little slow on the uptake-- I dunno 'bout
Philly, but it's been *so* busy around here! Gurl, it's done put me
*right* to Workin'!!!

ANYway-- I'm coming out weekend after this one (actually, gettin in
*late* Thu. night, what, the 4th of Nov. or something like that), as is
FW Maile Pickett, from Santa Cruz. She's a big @-wob too. I'll be there
for a long weekend, Maile for a bit longer.

I'm excited to meet y'all, and only hope Josie and Bob (those boyz *:)
don't hype me up to everyone so that my actual appearance is an
anti-climax. No, rrreally! Honey, it don't take no house to hostess me--
just gimme a clue and something to do and a comrade or two, and I'll get
right down to being there...

Thanx again for reachin' out-- someday there'll be enough of us involved
that I'll actually have time to respond to fox in more timely a manner...

Soli (and anticipation, too...!)
