21 June 1994 e.v. Kook City, CA Dear Friends, Fellow Workers, Compan~eras and Post-Gender Comrades, My apologies for what might appear to be, at first glance, a form letter. I wish I had time to write each of you individually, BUT this situation can be rectified. If you're so moved, upon receipt of this letter, give me a call-- we can do breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, maybe a beer or even hit-and-run. But either way, please consider the following. There is, at this moment, an I.W.W. referendum in the field. It's due back in GHQ by the 9th of July. There's some hot shit on it, and some bad ideas too (imagine that!). Left to dues-firsters, some bad decisions could be made, and some good opportunities missed. Whichever gets you more bothered (if the I.W.W. is capable of getting you worked up whatsoever anymore!), I hope you'll consider re-upping your dues to have your say in this surface-calm, but really quite hot, referendum. First, the little thing. There's a couple of bad dues-increase ideas on the ballot. They would, in my ever-humble yet informed opinion, drive poor people out of the IWW and bar the way for people like you to get re-involved if ever so moved. (One would raise minimum dues to $10!) The other thing is much more special. There is the matter of this year's General Assembly site to be determined. Santa Cruz GMB has put forward a motion for a Direct Action Assembly, one that will directly challenge a series of Matrix-style anti-poor laws, the sort from which we're all under attack recently. I think you've seen this proposal (at least I've tried to get you a copy); if not, let me know and I'll get you a copy ASAP. I also happen to have copies of: a bunch of letters from the GOB in support of the direct-action assembly proposal in Santa Cruz, a series of press clippings from the initial uprising against the odious ordinances in question (May '94), and a one-hour video of the first month of resistance to S. Cruz-style Matrix. Even if the IWW no longer turns *your* crank, it's vital to resistance there. Would you lend a hand to comrades like yourself??? ANYway, I tried to write this letter before, and it went on for three pages. That won't work-- for you or for me. If you have even enough interest to want to find out more about whassup, give me a call and let's make a date! And if not, I'll just have to find another way to get you bothered into motion... not to presume you aren't already, just that, well, you know how I get! (Heeheehee!!!) Think it over, and call me or not. It will always matter, I guess, but the referendum point is moot on July 9th.
